I don't know the cost for tearing down the engine to replace the piston but I would think getting a used engine from someone parting out a wreck would be cheaper. Are you sure the piston is the only damage to the engine? Jack

Vip, like pophen eludes to, if a piston fails, normally it damages a lot of other things in that cylinder, assuming that the small metal chunks don't find their ways to other parts of the engine. To repair the cylinder most likely will involve removing the engine from the car. That right there is about 10-15 hours of labor for the removal and reinstall. Now, to fix the motor, you are more than likely looking at something in the neighborhood of say $3000 USD for the time required to do things properly and to have the block looked at to ensure its integrity (boil block, flux testing, rebuild kit, fixing anything that is broken, etc). So, something in the neighborhood of say $5000 USD would not be unheard of to get the motor back to 100%. But, the plus side to this is you have a brand new motor.

As for the used motor, you will still end up spending the time in labor for the removal/install (10-15 hours of work), but the motor cost will be down around say $1000 (or less depending on the condition of the motor and what strings you can pull). So, you can cut the cost in almost half. But, now you have an engine that you don't know the whole story on. Most have no issues, but some can be a pain. You get what you pay for.
