Default Code Readers

What is the best OBD code reader for my XF 260 2019,
prefer one that does not break the bank.

Welcome to the forums Rayzin645,

The dealer diagnostics tool for 2017 onwards is JLR Pathfinder which requires an expensive dongle interface and a subscription to TOPIx. Back in the real World, have a look at iCarsoft. I've found the CR Pro suitable for most troubleshooting on my F-Pace.

Please read the guidance for new members ( https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/n...ned-up-241802/ ) which answers many of the most frequent questions about getting started.

Enjoy the forums.

Graham

Almost all OBD II codes are generic, it was designed that way. Readers that get down to codes specific to a manufacturer/car are expensive but worth it if that's what you need or want. I've been using the same inexpensive reader for my last 4 cars and haven't run across an error code that I couldn't identify. Just make sure the reader can also clear codes, some cheap readers cannot.

New member here with a few XK8 questions. Is the iCarsoft LR V3.0 the right code scanner for a 1998 XK8 4.0? Next one is a bit trickier, pretty sure I have a blown head gasket as I'm losing coolant and gaining oil. I did a compression test with following results: (Std cylinder numbering) 1 -195 psi, 3 - 195 psi, 5 - 200 psi, 7 - 200 psi, 2 - 165 psi, 4 - 130 psi, 6 -135 psi and 8 - 210 psi. I thought that 8 would have been the lowest reading because I saw oil and coolant on the plug and I didn't expect 4 and 6 to be so low either. My plan is to pull the heads, look in cylinders and hope for no cracks, reassemble with new gaskets and seals and hope for another 50 miles out of it. Plastic coolant parts to be replaced with aluminum, new hoses, plugs etc. Any other suggestions?

Since it's a 1998 do you know the status of the engine concerning the Nikasil lining? Has it been replaced by a steel cylinder liner version? It's old enough that I am sure that been taken care of but wanted to check.

Before you go to all that work do a coolant test for combustion gases first. Way cheaper and then you will know for sure if that's the problem.
Was the engine over heated? I would want to at least check the heads for flatness and possibly even skin them a bit to make sure.

If you suspect a cracked head or block you could pressure test the coolant to see if you can find any leaks.

Yes you have 2 cylinders that are pretty low but I have seen numbers similar and the car ran and drove fine. So don't tear into it yet!
Why do you only want another 50 miles out of the car?

My bad, I ment 50K miles. I thought about the coolant test but my test kit is 30 miles away. I
ll get a lenders from autozone and pressure test coolant system and check for exhaust gas, I know the engine has the original Nikasil liners. I don't think the engine has ever been overheated at least to my knowledge, I'm pretty sure the B side head gasket is blown.

Don't have any experience with Nikasil stuff but have read that if it's lasted this long you are fine.
Hopefully if it is the head gaskets there is no other damage.
