Default 1 year service based on in service date or time

I purchased my car new with 100 miles on the odometer last May 5th. The car had been put into service by an out of state dealer 10 months previous (starting warranty in August). I called my dealer to have the 1 year service as we are coming up on May. They said service not due until August. My dealer said they told me this when I bought the car (which they likely did), but at the time I didn't think the car wouldn't be serviced after 1 year of actual ownership. Should I not wait and have the oil changed on my dime although the warranty won't be affected?

No need to worry. Modern oils can easily last two years or more (Mini specifies two year change intervals, for example). The limit is really filter capacity to remove particles. Having said that, if the engine is run and shut off in frequent cycles then all agree the oil should be changed once per year but that is to deal with possible water contamination effects. Since your oil was nice and clean for the whole time your car was "in storage" and all the water boiled out the first time you drove it then one year from date of going into service will be fine.

I don't think they are correct. Mine will be one year old at the end of April with about 9K miles. About five days ago the "Sevice Required" indication began to show when starting the vehicle. Then, two days ago, my dealer called to remind me that since I hadn't scheduled a 15K milage service yet, the vehicle must be scheduled for an annual service before the end of April to maintain the warranty.

They are saying because the vehicle was put into service in August of 2011 and the warranty started running before I bought it in May 0f 2012, the service is not due until August. They are also saying it is the 30k service not the 15k although it never had a 15k service. It seems like I should have serviced at the beginning of August last year for the 15k service, at the end of the first year after the in service date even though I had only owned it for 3 months. Seems like Jag got out of providing the 15k service.

Possibly you should get this dealer "advice" in writing. It is correct that no service is required if the car wasn't used but for future warranty issues maybe get this in writing.

I'll second what Jagular said. Get it in writing before your May purchase date occurs.

P.S. If they sign off on what they say, then yes they got out of the 15K service. Otherwise, demand the 15K sevice before your May purchase date.
