I’m sure this question has been answered somehow on here already, but I’m just starting to look at jags since I’ve found a few for under $10k 🤯… my question, is it worth it? They range anywhere from 100-130k miles with no major problems. What should I expect? My main car now is a cla250 will I have fun with the jag (I know there completely diffrent classes)?

 

One problem - the changeover from the 4.2 SC to the 5.0 SC in the XF was in 2009 so there is no such thing as a 2010 or 2011 XF 4.2SC.
So are you asking about the 2009 4.2 SC or the 2010 and 2011 5.0 SC?
Coz while the cars themselves are almost identical they are very different engines with different problems.

 

Ah ok that makes a lot more since, knowing that is there a certain year I should look for? If 2009 is when they switched over is the 09 4.2 fairly well sorted out?

 

I have a 2008 build XF 4.2 supercharged, known here in Aus (and in the UK) as the SV8. I absolutely love it. I've owned it 2 1/2 years and have put 70,000km on it in that time, have had the engine out twice, completely dismantled the interior to replace a leaking a/c evaporator, replaced a couple of door lock actuators and a window regulator. And a fuel pump that left me stranded 300 yards from home. And I absolutely love it. It has been a maintenance glutton but every time I fix it, as soon as I drive it again all is forgiven. I can't believe how cheap these cars are in the US. They were $165,000.00 new here, I paid around $27k for mine with 120,000km on it and 11 years old. Almost the same $ as my wife's Mazda 3 sedan that I bought new the same year. The Jag is ten times the car, of course.

 

Totally agree ! I have the same car as you ( as you know) and absolutely , it is a lot of car for the money . I am super glad ( just IMHO) that I went for the 4.2, some of the early 5-0 had problems I don't want to deal with.

But just to add to some some peoples' confusion , your signature says 2010 XF

 

Hmm dunno why I did that. Fixed it. Mine is definitely a 2008 build, although first registered and sold here in 2009.

 

Just to add in. I've had a 2010 XF V8 SC (5.0) for 10 years now and love it. Amazing car

I don't think there is a meaningful reliability difference between the 4.2 and the 5.0. Some different issues (diffs on the 4.2 vs timing chains on 5.0) but many similar issues (plastic cooling pipes, coolant pump etc)

Purchase price is pretty low now as they are getting old. So yes - easily affordable to buy. But as someone on here likes to point out, they still have the repair costs of an old luxury car - parts are pricey and main dealer and specialist labor can be high

Not to put you off - I would do it again in a heartbeat and I've not had major / expensive issues in a decade. But even a 'good condition car' could cost you a lot quickly

Can you do diy yourself? If so amazing help on here and a ton you can do cheaply. If not, do you have a great Indy who will work on it and you trust not to fleece you?
There is also the dealer. I still use mine sometimes for specific work where they know what they are doing and an Indy might be winging it. Not cheap but it hasn't been much I've needed so I've been happy to balance that

I strongly disagree with the 'jags are unreliable and expensive' narrative. Own a 12 year old BMW M5, Mercedes AMG, or other high powered luxury car and the reliability costs will be similar.

Btw - if you need encouragement there is a great Top Gear segment with Jeremy Clarkson driving the 2010 XF SC and the BMW M5. But only watch if you want to buy

Personally I'd get the 5.0 but I'm biased. And would focus on condition and service history - well maintained with frequent oil changes. Have a PPI for sure.
