So i recently purchased a 2011 Jaguar XF, it has been parked for a couple years due to a bad coolant leak. i replaced the plastic heater hose underneath the intake (i believe that is what its called) and the car started and it displayed within 20-30 seconds that the car was overheating. i turned the car off and did not notice anything. so i started it back up and drove it around my neighborhood and it was in limp mode.

Has this happened to anyone else and if so what did you due to fix it?

If you overheat it the aluminum engine block will warp in minutes and the engine is toast. So don't drive it at all until you sort it out

Lots of plastic parts to the cooling system that can degrade over time. Did I read it right - it has sat not driven for 2 years? If so, I would do a thorough service, change all fluids and replace all the plastic cooling system parts (search on here for how to do it) before you start it up again. New battery too. Coolant pump is a known issue on these - unless you're sure it has been done recently id suggest doing at same time while it's drained.

You will also want to carefully monitor for head gasket issues as it was likely overheated by previous owner. So be careful of not putting too much into it unless you are sure the engine is ok. They are v expensive to replace an engine (more than the car is worth) and only a few people have tried rebuilds as it's v hard to get the parts.

 

It was my friends car who i bought it from he had all the plastic coolant hoses underneath the intake replaced as well as the water pump. It is not actually overheating i believe, i think there might be air in the system or some other thing causing it to trip the computer.

 

He replaced all of the pieces maybe 6 months ago but has not driven the car due to the overheating warning light.

 

Ah - got it. Sounds like he was on the right track. Just be ultra careful it's not overheating due to the damage it can do

Certainly check if air is trapped in the cooling system. I suppose it's possible there is an issue with the heat sensor but I suspect that's unlikely. Is coolant circulating properly - can you check for flow? Have you replaced the valve that opens to let the coolant flow - maybe not opening properly?

Any other codes if you read the system? What else is logged in the computer?

Also how is the battery? Lots of gremlins when they are failing

Beyond that it might be worth a trip to a mechanic for deeper problem solving
