Default 2013 Jaguar XF, 120k miles needs new catalytic converter?

WTF? I had code P0420 pop up, and was told I needed a new catalytic converter and it was going to cost $3000?? This car is barely 10 years old? I'm in California, so I was also told that if I DON'T get it repaired, it will fail smog. This is insane. My GMC Yukon is almost 15 years old, my Nissan Altima is 20 years old...I've never once had a problem with the catalytic converter and it not passing smog? Any know if this is typical for Jaguar?

It's certainly not a common issue on the Jag. But it can happen on any car - typically unburned fuel getting into exhaust gases will burn up and damage the cat. Some other similar causes too. So before you replace the cat I'd work out what causes the issue otherwise you may be doing it again...

You could have been running rich fuel trims for a long time but not severe enough to trigger the check engine light and killed your cat prematurely.

I looked up a genuine jaguar cat for a 2013 XF 3.0SC without AWD and I've seen them as low as $1600, PN C2Z30792
Looks like a simple install so labor shouldn't be too bad.

@ZK686, contact a Jaguar main dealer as some of the parts are covered by an emission warranty.

I you've had misfire(s) on Bank1 unburned fuel can cause the catalysts to fail, thus DTCs P0420 for Bank1 or P0430 for Bank2.

What are LTFTs and STFTs? Post them here.

Yep, not uncommon on these engines for one or multiple fuel injectors to stick partly or fully open hence unburnt fuel fouling one or both cats.
