Default 5.0L engine noise

I have a "new" 2010 XF Portfolio. The engine seems a bit noisy, when idling, compared to my previous 2007 XK convertible. It sounds a bit like a diesel when idling. Anyone care to comment?

Probably direct injection injector ticking. These operate at very high pressures and are known to tick. Is this while inside the car or outside with the hood up to listen for the noise?

You can't hear anything inside the , it's very quiet. The noise is very noticeable outside the car with the hood closed.

It's a normal noise from the direct injection, which makes it sound like a diesel.

The direct injection can be noisey but the noise you are hearing my not be normal. i have heard of come 5.0L that sound like diesels and they have had problems. Need to go to dealership and get checked out.

I had the car in for service recently. The loaner I got was a relatively new 2012 XF. It made the same engine noise as mine. This makes me think it must be normal.

Sorry to revive this old thread...but, my 2011 XF also had me worried. I also would describe it as a "diesel" engine noise. But inside you can't hear it. I was worried about it and the service manager also said it was a normal thing for the 5.0 Liter engines. I hope with the exhaust upgrade I am planning I will be able to negate that noise with a pleasant, throaty rumble. Although, to be honest, I haven't seen many youtube post of the XF 5.0L NA with exhaust mods. I just find a lot of XFR or XF sc videos. Anyhoo, having read this thread put my mind more at ease, even though I won't be happy until that sound is drowned out.

I can't imagine it sounding any different. Same motor minus a supercharger. Exhaust note comes from engine and is altered by cats, resonators and mufflers for the final sound. So by changing your exhaust setup I have a hard time believing it would not sound the same minus getting a supercharger whine.

I agree with chXFS.

In my opinion, the best bang for your buck is to have a custom shop remove the entire center section and replace with straight pipes.

You will get a better low growl at idle and a mild increase in roar under excelleration.

And you do not have a drone at any speed of you leave the rear boxes in.

My custom pipes cost me $300 installed. They are not stainless but should last a very long time.

Do you have any pics you could post and maybe a video of the sound that your setup produces?

I did the exact thing "10 XF Premium" did, removed the the center muffler and resonators, replaced them with straight pipes. Here is the exhaust video:

Thanks guys. What is going on with that pop? I like the sound overall. Great videos. I am assuming the camera was recording audio outside the car, so the interior sound won't be as loud. I leave for work around 5:45 AM, this is going to **** off my neighbors and get me ran out of the HOA..lol....can't wait to get it done. So delete the center muffler, resonators and go with a straight pipe to the rear mufflers. Are those stock mufflers btw?...also, is this a reversible thing? Will I be able to reinstall the center mufflers and resonators that I took off the car? Or willi have to purchase new ones? Thanks for the help on this.

My car has the stock rear boxes and pipes.

I had my new pipes installed so that I could remove them and reinstall the stock center section at any time.

Totally reversible.

The "start-up" in an enclosed garage is pretty loud but it settles down as soon as the pipes fill up and the revs stabilize.

Inside the car you can barely hear much difference while driving around, just a little lower tone and much better growl. Not really louder.

When revved up, it is noticeable. But you control that.

Much less than any Harley Davidson.

You just have to tell your custom exhaust guy to make the new center section without modifying the front or rear section.

It can be done, just takes an hour extra not messing with the front section outputs. (See my pictures, show the muffler guy them and he should understand what you want. If he doesn't, you may want to find a new guy/place)

I looked at the pics of your set up and I checked out your vid. I like the sound that you got from that setup. I hope I don't regret this.. Going to see if I can find a shop to do the exact same thing. Thanks for the write up

I appreciate the video and info..But that was a little too harsh of an exhaust note for me..Mina still has the best sound I'm looking for.

I am worried about that too. But with this set up, it can be changed back and I am only out $300. I have been trying to put a grill badge on this car and came to find out that the entire front bumper needs to be dropped. I would rather take it in to the service department if that is going to happen. That will run me $150 for the hourly rate, plus the $53 I already paid for the grill badge. I would rather spend another bill on the exhaust and save the grill badge for later. I just don't want to drop the bumper at home and not be able to get it all back together...lol
