Default AJ V6 Engine

The June issue of Car&Driver has a brief article on the current AJ V6 engine. Found it interesting, the engine has a split crank shaft (i.e., the connecting rod journals are slightly displaced) to address the imbalance of a 90 degree V6. Doesn't seem to require balance shafts.

Bore and stroke are different from the V8 which surprised me since I though part of the reason for the V8-2 was to share components. Guess not...

Of course bore and stroke are different. It is 3000 cc's, not 3750 (5000 x 3/4).

Ya, thanks, math is hard...

But, I'm still confused, why didn't they make a 3.8l motor and use the same parts.

Because 3.0L is the limit in a ton of countries for a "luxury Tax". Anything over 3.0L is taxed heavily.

That is why most the manufacture's make a 3.0.

Split crank isn't so new either GM used it in the 80's 3.8 Buick and 4.1 V6 Chevys, as does Vipers V10. If you use balance shafts you'll pay Mitsubishi royalties.
