Default Average Annual Repair rate

Hi,

I am seriously considering a new 2012 XF, but still a bit unsure about the real life reliability. I have read online that the JD Power Dependability study may have been flawed (see link below). I thought I would start a poll asking those that have owned the car for at least 12 mos how many repairs they average per year.

The Truth About JD Power’s 2010 Vehicle Dependability Survey | The Truth About Cars

Thanks for your input.

I modified my poll from the original subject to focus on first 12mos instead of annualized repair trips.

If you want to put your length of ownership and total repair trips in your post, that would be great!!

Thanks for those that have responded. I'm kind of hoping for more responses. It is nice to see that so far the car has been trouble free for those 3 people.

I have to believe that more than 3 people had their cars for 12 mos or more.

If you have had your car for less than 12 mos, please respond and state how long you have owned that car and how many (if any) trips to the repair shop.

Thanks!

More important in the real world is why not how often.

The idea that JD Power is somehow flawed is just marketing by the author who competes with J D Power.

It really isn't useful to know how dependable a manufacturer has been three years ago unless you intend to buy one of those three year old cars.

These forums are the best indicators as they are posted in real time as the flaws and problems reveal themselves. Or not, in the case of the XF.

I agree it is important to know what is being repaired, but from the response to the poll so far it is tough just to get people to select a number. Ideally if you have had a repair it would be good to know what it was for a minor cosmetic issue or if you were left stranded (dead battery, broken transmission).

I have heard of folks not being able to shift out of park due to problems with the shifter. I'm not sure if this was redesigned for 2012 or not.

The shifter issue was a bad circuit board, replaced under warranty on early cars. Later cars do not have this fault. There was a fuel filler door issue which was replaced with an updated part. The lower anchor for the rear left seat belt was installed incorrectly on some cars, also fixed.

Some differentials were replaced due to a supplier to Jag having a short run of defective ones.

On a few cars there was a check engine light issue which required a software update, driveability was not affected.

Some cars in the UK and the US suffered from battery drain problems.

Various owners complained of creaks and rattles, many traced to the sunroof gasket squeaking.

That is the list of main issues. Only the transmission and the battery issues left owners stranded.

Consumerreports.org now has reliability ratings published for the '09 and '10 XF. The '09 had earned the distinction of being worst of the worst, but the recent '10 listing shows well above average reliability. Jagular's posted items above would certainly account for their findings and rating.

Odd. My XF has been the best car I have ever purchased and it's an '09.

Mind you, my car had only the CEL issue, which was purely electronic and did not affect driving or using the car in any way. The remaining "problems" never happened to my car but Jaguar "fixed" them anyway.

If you pay attention to Consumer Reports you end up buying only the most boring of cars.

Well, I should be a new owner very soon. I am dropping off a cashier's check tomorrow and the car should be arriving Saturday or Monday.

All my cars have been gray/silver in the past and we currently have 4 silver/gray cars. So I thought I would mix it up a bit and went with 2011 XF White w/barley interior.

I hope I have good luck with the dependability.

Congrats! Bold move on changing up the colour scheme...one of my favorites. I've been convinced of their more current reliability, and you've got enough warranty left to cover yourself anyways.

White Jaguars are classic. A friend of mine just painted his kit car Old English White from the Jaguar XK150 days. White looks sensational on the XF.
