Default Check Your Cabin Air Filter!!

Received my replacement cabin air filter today so went under the dash and pulled the old one out......Holy Crap! Something was living in there at some point! As you know I recently purchased the car from a Jaguar dealership after meeting the original car guy owner. This is a good example of do it yourself to be sure.

I am wondering how something would get in there. Anyone know where the air intake is?

Mouse nest? Intake is usually at the base of the windshield where air pressure is higher. I'd be checking for a chewed hole somewhere under the hood as it is hard to see how a mouse would get in though the normal air intake point.

It is a critter nest. Mice tunneled into the under car insulation on mine to create their nest.

My father had rodents chew into a main engine control harness on his Lexus. Disabled the vehicle. Lexus had to order parts from Japan in order to repair....and to our amazement covered it under warranty! Thats why he ended up owning a string of 5 of them.

Looks like insulation to me. I pushed a moist towel up in there to clean everything out before putting in the new filter.

There was a bit of dog food and a nut shell in there so I'm thinking a squirrel?? I have checked under the hood, under the car and cannot find any thing out of the ordinary as far as a chewed hole goes. There is the spot where the jack goes under the front passenger door that has an opening up into the body.

What bothers me even more is that this was missed in the used car inspection at the Jaguar dealership, doesn't seem like they do anything to the cars, bring em in and sell for the most possible profit forget about making sure its a good car. I shouldn't be surprised, the same place tried to sell me the G37s that had been all smashed up and put back together.

Sorry didn't take pics of actually replacing the filter but it is simple. Their is a fiber cover under the glovebox area held in by 3 clips, squeeze the clip together with a plier and pull it down and out, once all 3 clips are out the cover drops down and slides completely out (the clips stay in the slots on the cover). The filter cover has 2 clips on each side you squeeze inward and the cover with the filter slides down and out, it is located toward the outer side of the wheel well, you can't miss it. Make sure you have a flashlight, the footwell light just blinds you.

That is great service, they really care about their customers at Lexus!

When you look into the filter housing while upside down on your back in the passenger footwell with a flashlight you will see that there is a wire harness in there. I was very relieved that the harness seemed to have been left alone!

Hey I like your garage floor. I assume it's an epoxy coating. How is it holding up?

Yes, an epoxy coating purchased from Lowes, they sell it in gallon cans, can't remember the name of it but it was not part of a 'kit'. It's not bad, tires have pulled it up in a few spots.

Does anyone think this could be my issue to since when I push the RECIRC button it only stays on for 3 minutes and then reverts back to fresh air? Is there a flap that is being blocked but such crap built up in there like a nest?

Should stay on for about 20 minutes before opening itself.

Not the case here. I get the same 3-4 minutes before it reverts to fresh air and I have to smell the dirty car in front of me. I tried different modes also to see if it would ever stay closed with no such luck.

If you click on my link above, there's a PDF file that has complete instructions with photos. The instructions indicate 18 minutes, but it took me much less. I'm sure dealers charge $40-$50 for labor for this simple task.

Pictures are clear and DIY is usually more "fun". Nice PDF file
