Coolant Temperature and Radiator Fan
Vehicle is a 2015 XF 3.0SC
Does anyone know at what coolant temperature the radiator fan should come on? It turns on if I turn the AC on but I've never seen it come on any other time. I recently observed my coolant temperature sitting around 220f while driving into work (It's pretty hot in my neck of the woods these days). I had the car into a local (non-Jaguar) service shop and they ended up replacing the thermostat and housing and checking the fan. They stated the fan is variable speed and turns on at different speeds depending on coolant temperature and that it was functioning properly. The workshop manual states normal operating temperature is 194f. They also stated that the original thermostat was "lazy" and didn't open until around 220f. They stated after replacing the thermostat/housing that it opened properly and coolant could be felt in the upper and lower radiator hoses.
What I've observed is:
ECT1 reads the correct temperature on my scan tool (iCarSoft i930 updated to latest firmware)
ECT2 reads ambient unless I turn the heat on. Then it will start to increase to closely match ECT1, this also causes ECT1 to drop to the normal 195f. The ECT2 sensor is located in the thermostat housing according to the workshop manual. How can it read ambient when the thermostat is open?
The fan does not turn on unless I turn the AC on.
Can anyone verify that things are working correctly? 220f seems pretty warm to me.
Thanks!

Thanks for the reply!
What I've observed is the fan will turn on when ECT2 reaches about 195F. The thing is, ECT2 only reads ambient air temp until the thermostat opens. This is normal operation as far as I'm concerned, the issue is the thermostat doesn't seem to open until ECT1 is around 220F which seems too hot to me. The shop claims they replaced the thermostat so it should be opening around 205F. Is it normal for a thermostat to actually open hotter than what it's rated at?
