Default demo lease question

I was interested in a XF awd vehicle at my local dealer. It has 200 miles on it, because it was used as a demo. When I started to talk about the lease terms, he wrote me the following:

Unfortunately we can not lease this car as due to the fact that we started the clock on the car meaning we entered it as a dealer demo.

He said the car has never been titled, but, they will not lease it because they "started the clock" as a demo. That struck me as strange. Any idea what is going on here.

Jaguar must have changed their policies. I leased an 2009 XF that had 1200 miles on it as a demo and received the remainder of the factory warranty.

I have always known it the way dealer explained. Can't lease used cars, but i suspect anything is possible.

Default new demo

I would have understood if it was used. But he explicitly said the car has never been titled and is being sold as new inventory.

Sounds like they would rather sell it than lease it for some strange reason. If they are going to sell it as new, then the warranty must start from zero. Logic would dictate that if that is so, then it should be able to be leased as well with a zero start warranty (i.e. the 200 miles would be added to the 50,000 mile warranty period. and the warranty time would be the full 4 years.). Ask a dealer in Albany or NYC about it.

Is the XF you are looking at a 2.0 model?

Dealers can still sell you a new vehicle with less than full warranty. It can have an in-service date already without the vehicle ever being owned or titled. This is usually what happens with VIP-loaners and vehicles dealers cannot sell. I just purchased a 2011 xf s/c with 500 miles on it because it was a VIP-loaner and it was sold as new because it had never been titled. I am only left with 2.5 years factory warranty because it already had an in service date.

Not sure what the issue with leasing the vehicle is though. Maybe they can't lease vehicles that already have an in-service date?
