Default Fuel pump failure- is this a common one?

The SV8 has been laid up for a fortnight waiting for a new fuel pump to arrive from the UK- finally got the new pump in yesterday and happily the Jag is back on the road instead of in the shed where it has spent altogether too much of the 18 months I have owned it.
Upon removal of the failed pump, the fault is immediately apparent; one of the power wires that has a spade connector from the flange, has been getting hot. The insulation on the wire itself is melted near the spade connector, there is heat discolouration around the base of the spade terminal on the pump body but, oddly, the spade connector itself is a VERY loose fit. I am wondering if this loose terminal has been producing heat in there since new and eventually led to this failure. The wire was disconnected when I removed the pump but this could easily happen during the removal of the top flange so no way of knowing if the failure was just that the wire had finally come off.
