We have updated results for the Jaguar XF to include owner experiences through March 31, 2010. In terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2010: 124, worse than average, two cars short of the minimum for a full result; the 2009 was worse a year ago

2009: 73, better than earlier, trending in the right direciton, and now about average

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

With the 2009 XF, the percentage with no repairs is about 51, while the percentage of lemons is about 3.

A big thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in August and November. With more participants, we could provide more precise results.

Not sure if this was covered earlier, apologies if so, but does this data take into consideration the percentage of all vehicles sold?

My concern is that people participating on this website are probably those that have had problems and are looking for others that have problems (unless of course they are those here that are choosing to participate) and once they find others that are experiencing problems it's a shoe in that they will contribute to the skewing toward the dark side.

The percentage of vehicles sold isn't relevant. I know this isn't intuitive, but the formula for calculating sample sizes doesn't even include the size of the population.

On your other concern--this has been raised many times before, but perhaps not here. It's a hypothesis that certainly makes logical sense, but in practice we've found that the great majority of people who sign up do not initially report a repair. For some car models owners hardly ever report a repair. For others, like the XF, the reported repair frequencies have been confirmed by other reliability surveys. So there's little if any evidence that this is actually a source of significant distortion.

The structure of the survey process probably helps a lot. Unlike in other reliability surveys, people join then report going forward, rather than what happened before they joined.

With the August results we'll have full results for both the 2009 and 2010, though the latter is right at the minimum.

Those updated stats in about a week. Additional participants would certainly be helpful, especially for the 2010 and up.

We have updated results for the Jaguar XF to include owner experiences through June 30, 2010. Other sources of car reliability information won't cover the more recent months until the summer or even fall of next year.

Repair frequencies, in terms of repair trips per 100 cars per year:

2010: 132

2009: 93

Both are worse than average.

We have two additional statistics, "Nada-odds" and "Lemon-odds," to indicate the percentage of cars with no repairs in the past year and those that required 3+ trips to the repair shop.

With the 2009 XF, the percentage with no repairs is about 51, while the percentage of lemons is about 12.

Thank you, once again, to this forum and everyone who has been helping. We'll have further updates in November and February. With more participants, we could provide more precise information and cover all model years. Especially need more participants for the 2010 and up.

Updated reliability stats next month.

As always, the more owners participate, the better the information we can provide to everyone.

We have some new pages that display all reported repairs by problem area:

From this page it's possible to select a different model year or specify a problem area.

Is it only for newer cars? I think that website is a great idea!

Thanks for asking. Not only for newer cars. The main reliability survey covers back to the 1995 model year.

Hold on a sec, population size isn't the issue. The issue is truly random sampling which is by no means the same thing.

If the sample is obtained randomly then results are surprisingly independent of population size. However, any lack of randomness adversely affects the ability of anyone to use a sample to predict the whole.

Stuff will break every once in ahwhile.

But it's a Jag.

Drive a Kia if you want a slightly lower likelihood that the wipers will make a funny noise.

But if you want a beautiful, fast car, consider a Jaguar.

I also assume that owners of Jaguars have higher expectations then would an owner of a KIA. Whereas I as a XF owner may take the car to the dealer for a wiper noise--most KIA drivers would be happy as long as the wiper worked dependably.

There's actually no need for hypotheticals. We post descriptions for all reported repairs to the site. View them to see if they're things any owner would have fixed vs. only one with very high standards.

On the lack of a random sample--sure, I'd love to have one. But randomly sampling owners would cost far more, and in the real world, with a response rate under 25 percent, would be of limited benefit.

Instead, unlike any other I'm aware of the survey collects data going forward rather than asking people about repairs that occurred before they joined. This way whatever past experience might have led someone to join won't affect the results. We also have a much higher response rate than a random sample would, which reduces the potential for non-response bias.
