I have a 09 xf and was wondering if a diffuser from a 2012 will fit mine

Bumper cover 9-11 is part number C2Z2148XXX
Bumper cover 2012-2015 is C2Z14002XXX
So no.

You can't swap over the entire cover because the bracket and absorbed are all different as well.

that said, I have done other cars swapping out ALL components to make it all work on cars of different years with the same body

Not worth it in my book.

Just chiming in to say that you can't always rely on differing part numbers meaning something won't fit - maybe the diffuser is the same shape and the top of the bumper cover is different, or maybe they changed the part number on a model refresh but the bumper cover actually didn't really change, etc.

Sadly I can't confirm if it'd fit or not - I have a 2010 so same shape as yours and I got a diffuser from Mina Gallery, but I can't find them on their site right now - might be worth getting in contact with them to see what they suggest.

To the OP:
I think it depends on what rear diffuser and valance you already have.
Like Tibbsy I fitted a Mina Gallery "post 2012 style XFR imitation" one piece valance plus diffuser to my old 2010 XFS and it fitted up perfectly (although it was a PITA to instal!).
Mina haven't advertised that item for a long time now so I believe they no longer make/stock it.
My old XFS had the simple black plastic one piece valance/diffuser with cut-outs for the twin "hexagonal" exhaust tips.
There are also numerous reports on the Pommy Jaginfo forum of owners successfully fitting the later valance and diffuser to a pre-2012 car.
Sometimes it fits right up, sometimes you need to cut some extra mounting slots in the bottom edge of the bumper.
But the key is you must update BOTH the diffuser AND valance, you can't fit a post 2012 diffuser by itself to a pre 2012 valance.
