Refurbished 5.0 Supercharged Engines?
Hello Gents,
As you know from the other thread, my engine is in poor shape (bent valves & timing issues). Figuring that I need to speed around $9k for a head and timing replacing job, I was curious if anyone has a recommendation for 5.0 supercharged refurbished engines? I have seen a few on ebay but was curious if anyone had any first hand knowledge on a good source? Has anyone searched and successfully found a new engine? Curious what that price might look like?
Thank you in advance!
Regards,
Brian

Never seen a new engine for sale - so I can only imagine that JLR was able to recover those stolen engines (which if I recall correctly were 5.0 V8s too). I too have seen engines on eBay in various conditions and prices. Prices seem to have dropped a little but still stay pretty consistent.
My main concern would be: Knowing what we should all know now about this engine and issues around timing gear, would you really want to fit a used engine you got off eBay without first:
1) Replacing oil seals, crank main seal, etc
2) Examining sump for metal etc
3) Changing out oil pump
4) Checking that new-style timing gear is installed?
I wouldn't. Just making the point that this can add a potentially considerable amount of work (and money!) to even having a used engine fitted into the car.
Sure, when you're dropping a standard engine from a junkyard into a mid-2000s Civic then who really gives a ****, they're two a penny and pretty bulletproof. But these engines can still apparently get 5 figures online for no real guarantee of condition. You can get a brand new Ford Racing crate engine for that, so this is not a cheap proposition.
