Default Spontaneous Low Fuel

So this evening I went out for a bit of shopping and my fuel gauge suddenly dropped to 0 and I got a Low Fuel warning.

Turned car off, back on, fuel gauge working... And it read empty a few hundred yards later. Everything else is working great btw, no huge fuel leak

I've seen a previous topic here which links to this TSB. My VIN however isn't in the range specified, but as previously discovered on here it is actually an MY2010 which this "covers".

Is anyone able to find if that TSB is correct or if there is another? I can't seem to find a site I can get a succinct answer from.

Also if it is covered by a TSB is it a no-cost repair?

Thanks

Simon

I know the xj 350 and s types had issues with this, but haven't really seen it on the xf 5.0L. Even though your car may not be in the vin range, it can still fix the fault. Otherwise, it could be the sender itself. You can try this, press and hold the trip button on the end of the stalk, turn the ignition on while still pressing the trip button, hold for about 8 seconds then release the trip button. This will put the car into engineering mode. On the instrument cluster, you will see all the LEDs light up, this is just checking they all work. Now you can keep pressing the trip button and it will scroll a bunch of information on the message display. Scroll through till it says " Raw Fuel ", go slowly otherwise you'll have to scroll through again. Once you get there, it'll say raw fuel 1 and raw fuel 2. What they mean is a measurement of the amount of fuel in each side of the fuel tank, because the fuel tank is a saddlebag type. If one of those numbers says 250, that means open circuit, possible fuel sender fault. The car will stay in engineering mode till you turn the ignition off. You can do the same procedure and start the car and drive it like that and watch to see if the fuel level goes to zero, and see if there is a 250 showing. Now granted you've been able to achieve this, raw fuel 2 is the drivers side of the fuel tank. If you have trouble putting it in engineering mode, let me know. Hope this helps.

I had same problem with MY2010 5L XF sc, built in 2009. It would do that at a very specific fuel level, above or below it would show accurate, 1 specific spot it dropped to zero for a few miles. It had CPO warranty, I took it into the local dealer and it was fixed - code was 869480 fuel level sender wiring harness mod, used C2z27711 connector and c2z7361 gasket. Glad I had CPO warranty. TSB JTB00301NAS1 same as you indicated
