I'd like it if I could show the gear number instead of the clock or even the gear numbers above the clock by themselves would be better than the big clock!

Nup, well at least not permanently while in D.
If you put it in S and Dynamic the gear number shows up "big" in the central display, then turns orange when you approach the redline and goes red if you hit the redline. In S but not Dynamic the gear number shows up small and doesn't change colour.
In D, if you use the paddles, the gear number shows up "small", but if you stop using the paddles for a period it goes back to normal D and the gear number disappears again. The period it takes for this to happen after you last used a paddle varies quite a lot, depending on how you have been driving (Miss Daisy or Boy Racer) and if you use the paddles fairly often the gear number will continue to show for a while even after it has gone back into D.
I suggest you try using the paddles a lot while in normal D (ie without Dynamic) and see what happens.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the big gear number changed color as you go up in revs, that's a nice touch. I haven't driven it much in manual. This is my first auto and flappy paddles is something I need to used too. I can change up ok but is coming down I forget and it has 8 gears! That said it will try to climb hills in 7th so the paddles are a must sometimes.
What's the easiest way to reengage drive mode once you use the paddles? I've been switching it over to sports then back.

To go from paddle mode to D just hold the right paddle in for 2 or 3 seconds.
