Default TPMS (Again)

I know TPMS has been talked about many times in this forum but I have something a bit unique.

I purchased OZ rims, then tpms from ebay and some tires all separate. (Was about $500 cheaper this way).

Had them all mounted. Found that the TPMS being OEM did not fit great in the valve cavity. Had a shop mount them. Went to get them and they were all flat. They remounted them stealing the valves o-rings that came with the rims. Put them on the car and the rear passenger went flat within 2 days. I took it back to the shop. They remounted and sealed them better. Put it back on the car and in 3 days it was flat. Took it back to the shop. This time they kept them for 3 days. Mounted them every morning and the next morning they would be down about 5 lbs. In the end they mounted them and filled the stem cavity with silicone. I put it on the car and in 2 days the tire was low again.

I took it to another shop who had a large basin to see where the leak was from thinking maybe not the stem. Sure enough it was just around the stem. They took them off and mounted with the stem that came with the rim. IT DIDN'T SEAL! Luckily enough the shop knew that before they gave it back to me. They then put a rubber valve in (without TPMS) and mounted. I have had them on for about 3 hours and not leaking yet but the biggest check will be in a day or two.

My question:

Why is the TPMS sensor not going off now that just a regular valve stem is in?

It went off with the OEM sensor in when the tire was low but now without a sensor at all the light or warning isn't coming on. Anyone have an answer?

PS this was all happening in -30 degree Celsius weather. The shop didn't understand why it didn't leak when it was at +20 in the shop and would when it was -30 outside…guess they missed the chemistry class to know air thins in cool temps.

Sorry for the story book!

Aaron

I don't have the TPMS on my winter tires and it took 2 days for the system to realize there was a fault.

Interesting...it took about 30 seconds to recognize the new TPMS when I first put them on the car (put them on, pulled out of a garage, fault went out). I hope it just never comes on but don't think that will happen and if it does then maybe I have a bigger issue.

Most shops that have this issue drill another hole inside the rim and fit the oem sensors in place. Then theres no issue as long as they check location so you dont rip out the brake pad sensor wires like ivwe seen shops do on the new ftype with aftermarket wheels

No. Any gas becomes DENSER as it gets cooler, NOT "thinner".

Correct installation torque is vital or the TPMS seals leak. The specified torque is in inch pounds. Tighter isn't better. Whenever you experience TPMS problems maybe consider changing tire installers. When my tire pro called the Jag dealer they said "what torque spec" Get the picture?
