Default XF with smaller V8

I am considering getting a used XF and have been looking at the base V8 engines. It appears that originally there was a 300hp unit with slightly better gas mileage over the 385hp unit. How does the performance and reliability of these two differ?
Any input from someone who has the smaller engine?

Actually that is not true, the newer 5.0 engine is not only more powerful, but also has direct injection resulting in better fuel economy.

The older 4.2 has two things going for it, better sound and a cheaper price. If it were my money, I would pick the 5.0 every time.

I see the spec for the 5.0 gas mileage listed as 16-23, while the 4.2 is listed as 16-25. are these not accurate? could I expect better from either or both?

Go with the 5.0L..You will not be disappointed with the performance...I've gotten around 27 highway..cruising at 75....Not to sound like a smart ***..But who worries about mileage in a Jaguar anyway?..know what I mean?

I am partial to the SC... because of all the mods that can be incorporated....but like DPK said....once you start driving the beast ...you won't be thinking about Gas mileage ...cost of fuel ..etc....etc... You'll be thinking about where can I drive to next.
