Default the good oil..

What oil are you guys running in higher-mileage X300 engines?
My car has had Castrol Magnatec in it from previous owner's services.
Is there any gain in fully synthetic at nearly 90,000 miles?
What viscosities can you get away with in a higher-mileage engine?
In NZ ambient temps range from 0'-30'C, so no extreme cold starts...

all advice welcome!

FWIW, my 1999 AJ-V6 unit is purring like a mouse's heart at 134,000 miles on 5W-30 semi-synth.

This will be good, mmm.

I run:
Hi-Tec Synthetic 10W/30 in the X300 all year round, at 202000kms.
Hi-Tec 15W/40 in both V12's. one at 254000, the other at 505000kms, all year round.
Whatever is on special 20W50 in the MK10, whenever I remember it. No idea of milaege, odometer stopped some 10 years ago.
Hi-Tec 0W/30 in the S Type all year round, 123000kms.

Winters are usually 0-5c coldest portion, and summers are 44c+ whenever "mother nature" gives us a belting.

My XJR is just shy of 140k miles so I am extremely fussy and demanding when it comes to motor oil.

I have a very exacting standard.

Here it is: what name brand is on sale that day?

I use 10/40, changed every 5000 miles.

Use is 1 quart/4000 miles, by the way. I can live with that.

Cheers

The gain you'll get with going fully synthetic is longer intervals between oil changes. For me, I've now chosen to reduce the number of oil changes from 3 times per year to 2. I use Mobil 1 HM 10W40 for 6 months/7,500 miles. Before, I used different conventional oil brands and viscosities for 4 months/5,000 miles. I feel comfortable with either plan. Oh, and I have nearly 116,000 mi.

thanks, all - good recommendations given the mileages you've all got on your cars.
Grant in OZ - just out of curiosity, how often has the 500000 km V12 had an engine rebuild? - I've seen a 6 litre X300 Double Six for sale, about 160-180,000km on the odometer. I am a bit wary of a high-miles V12 in case it hasn't had the proper love..

Maaaaaaate.

A V12 at 500000kms is basically "just run in" in MY opinion.

The PreHE as this one is, is sweet. It leaks oil haha, it loves fuel hahaha, starts on command, and only stops when switched off. it is still in almost daily use, and being a S2 is simply nice.

The BW12 trans is getting a tad lazy, and leaks also, but it still goes forward in "D", and backwards in "R", what more do you want??.

The later ones, as in HE etc are equally as good, BUT, and there is always a BUT here, IF they have been overheated, that is the death knock of them, sadly.

The 6ltr in an X300 is a RARE beast in any market, and at that mileage I would not be too concerned unless he wants a motza for it, as some do.

The same "catch up" maintenance will be required no matter what is documented, or stated, so be prepared for that, please.

Hey Grant I use Hi Tec oils as well

My mate is the local agent up here on the Gold Coast pretty happy with all the products I have used from them also price is very reasonable

I am using their Hi-Tec Super 70 (SAE 25W/70)in my XJR most guys thinks its to thick pours really nicely from the bottle change it every 10,000 k,s and my car has 242,000k,s on the clock and if my oil gauge was actually accurate I bet my gauge wouldn't sit in the corner at idle in 40 degree summers (LOL)

I also add some MT10 each oil change and run TC-W3 outboard oil in the fuel as well Some might say snake oil
I don't really care I intend to keep my xjr for a very long time

Lol Doug! That's exactly how I do it.... 10W-40 every 5000 in the AJ16, although I like to use semi-synth. The six loses only about 1/4 qt between changes.

I use 20W-50 semi-synth in the 6.0 V12. It's HOT here, but she handles it very well since receiving her new radiator 3 years ago. It feels right. I would bet that other similar types would work just as well. I only put about 3k a year on, so she gets it once a year whether she needs it or not!

Ooh, a drop of two-stroke goodness in the fuel, eh? Good for what ails yer!

How much do you use, exactly?

I'm not sold on the benefits of magnatec, or convinced by those who swear that synthetic oils are somehow 'bad' for new engines... so something synthetic for me (I look for specs and good offers rather than brands!) - currently 5W40, but that bit could well change!

I see. Would synthetic autolobe stuff for motorcycles be much the same, or is one with marine/premix bias more appropriate, would you say?

It's *got* to be the TC-W3. If your bottle says that then fine.

You should have a look at the thread that doc pointed at as there are more details there.

Yup, NMMA standard TC-W3 - got it. I've read that thread too.

Europeans also have another standard to look for ... forgot what though. And, then Japan is JSAO-x. Both are a tad tougher specs than TC-W3. All TC-W3 is tinted blue like the question mark icon up in the corner of this post or your linkedin icon.

Yes, all the good stuff is JASO FC-compliant, like that delicious Silkolene synthetic stuff that smells like God breaking wind. Well, it does during the North-West 200, anyway! ;o)

Bought it with 63k on the clock and 15W-40 aboard. Tried 10w-30 syn at 68k, Vavloline 20w-50 VR1 Racing at 73 k, then settled on Shell T6 5W-40 Syn at 80K. Still quite happy with it at 131k today.
