2011 XJL questions
Yesterday, I traded my 2012 XF in to purchase a 2011 XJL and have a few questions about the nav system that I hope someone can help me with.
1) I have set the clock to 12 hour time, but the navigation ETA displays in 24 hour time. I have touched the time icon on the nav screen in hopes to change it, but nothing happens. I have looked in nav settings and don't see a way to change it.
2) The distance to destination displays in miles, but the navigation voice (British female) advises upcoming turns in kilometers.
One frustration that I don't think there's a remedy for:
I purchased the vehicle at a Lincoln dealership and was told that the 5/50K warranty started after the car was first titled. The car was a manager's car for about 8 months and wasn't titled until it was leased. Jaguar USA says that they use date it was placed in service and not the date of first title to determine the beginning of the 5/50K. I'm disappointed that I have only 13 months of warranty remaining rather than 21.
Thanks.

My suggestion is to purchase and mount a 7" Garmin GPS unit atop the dash. It is a far, far superior GPS than that which came in your car, and being mounted above the dash is closer to your your normal line of sight when driving. I made a little hood out of matte black construction paper to keep direct sunlight off the Garmin's display screen. The Jaguar XJL is a great car in many, many respects, but it's GPS system is horrible.

From the system settings menu (via steering wheel controls, not the nav system) select American English as your language choice, not English. This determines what voice is used. This will probably correct the miles/km issue also.
This was not one of your questions but I purchased a XJL 2011 and now have 103,000 miles on it. At 82,000 had to replace the engine as it overheated and warped the head and block but the temperature guage never indicated HOT. Highly recommend purchasing an extended warranty. Also every 50,000 miles you will need brakes.

They were never able to determine why the temperature gauge failed to show hot; however it does work now as several occasions when 90 degrees out and going about 30 MPH in town it jumps off center to 3/4 up the gauge then back down etc.

Thanks for the advice on the navigation system.
I have a couple of other questions.
Every car that I've owned (4 of them Jags) that has/had a light-colored leather gets dark dye marks on the seats from my belts. Anyone else have that problem? It is quite difficult to remove. I'm wondering if it is caused by the inexpensive belts that I wear.
The 2011 XJL that I bought has a Bowers and Wilkins system in it. I did not get a special brochure or any additional info on the system besides what is in the owner's manual. Was there any special info provided with cars with B&W systems? If there was, I would like to find a copy.
Thanks.

I have the ivory interior on mine and not had any issues with dye transfer but I've read many stories of others having the problem, especially with blue jeans. I don't think this is a Jaguar specific issue - it really depends on your clothing choices and realizing that the transfer is going to happen no matter what. Its just covered up by dark leather.
I don't recall receiving any special manual with the B&W system when I purchased my car and I purchased it new. Though to be honest, all the manuals are buried in my trunk with the spare tire and I haven't looked at them since I bought the car.

The transfer of dye on light colored seats is not unique to Jaguar. My wife has a Acura with light interior and she takes it back to the dealer every 6 months to have them cleaned (extra warranty). That is one of the reasons I selected the darker interior to avoid this issue.
Thanks for the info on my first questions.
Another few questions.
I have activated caller announce in the car's phone settings, but I only get text info on the screen but no audio announcement. I have an iPhone 4. Is there some iPhone setting that needs to be changed to get this to work?
Since my 2011 XJL is a very early VIN, I've been thinking about getting the update for navigation. From what I've read, I cannot determine the version that I'm currently running, only the dealer can---correct?
I enjoy having the British female's voice in the system even though some options like nav destination entry don't work in this mode. If I update the nav, will I lose the option of having the voice of British female?
Thanks.

We also own a 2-11 Lincoln MKX, it's my wife's car and she loves it. However, the Dove Gray seats give her heart failure since she can't wear some of her favorite, dark blue jeans, when in the car. The color bleeds onto the seats.
But in the case of the Lincoln, it's pretty easy to remove it with some mild leather cleaner and following up with a leather conditioner.
(Husband note) Now that she knows that the seats can be easily cleaned, she's back to wearing her favorite jeans in the car.

About 2 weeks ago, my 16 year old son was driving my 2011 XJL and was rear ended. He's okay, but they totaled the car.
I had just purchased the car in May, and it was indigo blue, ivory leather, and satin elm veneer. It was a very early VIN (00687). Yesterday, I purchased an immaculate 2011 XJL with $17K miles from an individual. It has a much later VIN. It is ebony, and according to the print out from the service dept, it has ivory leather and satin elm veneer. The print out specifies the leather as "ivory (new)".
The ivory leather is several shades darker than my other car and really looks like a parchment color. The veneer is very much darker and has many more burl patterns and fewer striated areas. I really love the car, but I'm curious to know if such "noticeably different" variations in colors is common.
Another question. The one option that my new car doesn't have that I absolutely loved in my other is the auto dimming or intelligent high beam headlights. Would it be possible that all cars are prewired for this feature and that the rearview mirror could be switched to one with the sensor and the headlamps switched to ones with AFS using salvaged parts (like from my previous car)? Selling the removed headlamps could help defer costs.
Thanks.
