Default 2012 XJ-L Superchrged - Realistic Maintenance Budget?

I'm close to a decision on a 2012 XJ-L Supercharged with 57,000 miles. Provided it checks out, the purchase price is very good from my research. We plan to keep the car and use it regularly - perhaps 15,000 miles/year. We live outside of the cities and rarely deal with any stop-and-go traffic but do a lot of two-lane rural highway and high speed interstate driving.

The car is obviously out of warranty but has a good service history from a Jaguar dealer in Florida. I've looked into purchasing a service contract and the dealer (a Chevrolet dealer) is offering 3 years/36K miles "powertrain warranty" for around $3,300 or a "Silver level" 2 year/24K miles that is more comprehensive for the same price. I'm wondering if I'm better off just banking that money for future repairs and adding to that fund as time goes by...

My experience with my previous 2002 XK8 (bought in 2011) was a good one and it didn't need anything beyond normal items for the three years I owned it. Nothing.. loved the car and drove it all over the country. The XJ is much more complicated obviously and has additional systems that will eventually need attention. Going forward from 57,000 miles out to 100,000+, what budget would plan for to cover servicing and repairs?

Thank you for any information you can provide.

Tim

I never owned XJ, but my 7 series BMW that I owned for many years out of warranty was $250/mo in maintenance and repairs. Fixes were all "balloon payments", so you have to have cash flow to absorb 2-3K fixes.

Generally, service contracts are not a good deal. They are insurance, and as such designed to deny claims. Too much fine print and gotcha clauses. I suggest self-insuring by putting $250/mo away into repair fund.

Your experiences with XK8 are not typical for that car, or for any car that is sold $100K new.

This is my recommendation from personal experience, I bought the extended warranty( Assurant Solutions) offered for USAA members in their website. 3yrs/36K no deductible, It was $4,200 for my 2012 XJL Supercharged with 40700 miles. They will give you the option to make 12 payments. They have kept their promise. I highly recommend this extended warranty if you qualify as an USAA member. If not go straight to the Assurant Solutions site and see their offers.

Thank you Reyesfam! Can you share an example of repairs that you had to have that were covered with this plan? Was it a simple process of them paying the repair facility?

Thanks

Things that I have replaced on a 2011 Non-supercharged XJ with 88,000 miles. Rearmain seal (two times!). Both motor mounts. Transmission mount. Radiator fan. Front Coolant crossover tube. Rear crossover tube. Water pump. Thermostat & housing. Hydraulic suspension bushings. Rear control links. Manifold pressure sensor. Coolant recovery tank. Just last week I dropped $2,640 for radiator fan replacement, rear crossover tube & replacing the rear brake pads.

My 2011 GMC truck with similar miles.... not one problem... zilch! Just change the fluids.

I would never buy an extended warranty for a GM truck, but I would on any modern European car with all the plastics in the cooling system.

Blimey, how does that break down? Sounds like about £150-200 of parts, which means that a lot of labour.

So you have done the repair and know how much labor involved?

Thats why I asked how that bill was broken down, as it seemed excessive for what sounds like fairly minor work. Due to our fuel costs this side of the pond, V8 isn't viable to me, hence mine is the lorry engined version.

I forgot to include all work done for $2640.
Relaced serpentine belt, rear crossover pipe, electric radiator fan, oil change / filter, rear brake pads and coolant. I supplied the rear brake pads, but the part cost for the fan was $975.00.

My wife needed the car asap, so I wasn't in the position to shop around. Plus I trusted the shop doing the work. They specialize in jaguars & land rovers and had the correct spec oil.

Engine mounts, Xmsn Mount, Lower control arms, upper control arms, front sway bar, water pump, fuel pumps. Easy process, the warranty pays the dealer.
