Default 2016 XJR oil

It calls for 0w 20 oil and mechanic keeps telling me to use 5W-40 in it. He has been working on Jaguars and Land Rovers for the last 25 years and he says that this is what makes timing chain go bad. I had 2014 XJR timing chain go bad. i do drive it hard sometimes but should not go bad. he says use 5w-40 in it. any thoughts?

Yep,
He's WRONG!!!!
This engine requires a specific 0W-20 oil, and not just any 0W-20 oil.
There are many threads on this subject...just don't put 5W-40 in it, you'll wreck the engine.

Think of it this way.

My body requires about 11 pts of A+ blood (0W-20). If I replaced that with B- blood (5W-40), I'd likely die....just like your engine will.

I happen to know this particular mechanic, he also practices holistic medicine on the side and advises that drinking water is what leads to many degenerative diseases attributed to aging, and recommends drinking only hard liquor for prolonged lifespan

I'm starting to like him! I hope he thinks I should start smoking again, and stop going to the dentist?

Were you using the wrong oil when you had the timing tensioner problems on your 2014 XJR? It's NOT the chain, it's the tensioner that's the problem.

I also race and have never found a faster XJ than mine. 174+ mph in the standing mile. Multiple times over multiple years.
I use what the factory recommends and I am at 53K miles. 0W-20 as per Jaguar. Do note that this has been changed from 5W-20 on your 2014. You can tell this as your oil cap will be marked 5W-20. Also you missed the biggest problem and that is the factory Jaguar change intervals are WAY too long! I change oil at 6K-8K miles.

At what mileage did you have your problems?

At the end of 2021 there were four brands I know of that met the latest backward compatible Jaguar oil spec. What ever brand oil you use, make sure the spec on the bottle says it meets STJLR51.5122 (0w-20).
