most likely fiction, there have been a bunch of articles about an XJ coupe for every XJ model that has come out.

Not necessarily fiction. The market for large luxury saloons has dropped dramatically in the last few years with the rise of the luxury SUV that so many people seem to want now. So to keep the XJ going, Jaguar could well decide to make something different on the same platform. So the saloon would still be available, but the additional model would ensure costs are spread over a larger production total. Since the XK went, Jaguar have no coupe that has useful space inside, the F-type has almost none and is just a fun car for those who are rich enough to run a stable of cars.

You know... I just don't get this fascination with SUV's. I've had three: a 1998 Dodge Durango, a 2000 Lincoln Navigator and a 2004 Cadillac Escalade. All were okay, but certainly not in the same category (comfort-wise) as other offerings from their respective companies. My wife had the first SUV in our family, a 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Later she had a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. Both were uncomfortable in my opinion. Nothing beats a luxury sedan for comfort!
