I believe the sensor is a camera by the center mirror.

The sensor is the white square in this picture, in the back of the rear view mirror facing the front of the car:

See the Owner's Handbook for pictures of the headlight control stalk and operating instructions: JJM 10 02 34 141 - XJ Owner's Handbook | TOPIx

Heck, I'm puzzled.

I do have that white "dot" on the rear view mirror. So "technically" I have that.

But on the manual, it says :

Heck on my instrument panel setup menu item I have peanuts. So I'm confused : have it or no ?

AUTO HIGH BEAM
This feature automatically selects and
deselects high beam, under specific conditions
of road lighting and in the absence of other
vehicle’s lights. The system is only active when
the ambient light drops below a predetermined
level.
This function is only active if the lighting switch
is in the AUTO position and the stalk is in the
central position.
The system will only activate when vehicle
speed exceeds 25 mph (40 km/h). The system
will deactivate when vehicle speed drops below
15 mph (24 km/h).
Note: Auto high beam does not operate when
reverse gear is selected.
To manually select high beam, move the stalk
to the high beam position as normal. To return
to Auto high beam, move the stalk back to the
central position.
To manually override to low beam from high
beam, pull the stalk to the flash position and
auto high beam will be cancelled. To return to
auto high beam, push the stalk to the high
beam position, and then return it to the central
position.

Daylight running lamps can be
enabled/disabled by your
Dealer/Authorized Repairer.
When auto high beam is enabled,
the system indicator will
illuminate.

If your headlight control stalk has an "AUTO"setting, and it is set to AUTO and your high beams don't automatically turn on and off (when appropriate), that function probably is turned off or it is broken. Check the Vehicle Setup menu and make sure that it's turned on.

See my earlier thread "Before You Ask For Help" and the link to the step-by-step video about how to use the setup menu. Select "High Beam Assist" and make sure ON is checked.

Firstly you need to find interior mirror with AHB sensor

The sensor located in front of mirror in square part of mirror near the windscreen

Default High beam assist sensor

I have that white square on my rear view mirror, but cannot set the HBA from the settings. I talked with our Jaguar dealer and he said that if the option was not originally installed, then it's not an option on my car - regardless of the mirror's design. Same mirror, some cars have HBA and some don't. Kinda makes me wonder if there's a software download that would enable this option.

For AHB function you need big sensor on bif rectangular case before mirror like on previous photo, also you need to reprogramm some midules and reprogram mirror, after these procedures you 'll have this option on menu. So you need find someone who has SDD skftware and cable for download SW.

All dealers tell the same, look on my mods they are impossible to make according dealers speaking

Default High beam assist

Thanks for the info on the high beam assist function. I'll have to recheck my sensor, then look for someone to assist with the software download. If we're willing to pay for it and the parts are all there, I wonder why dealerships are reluctant to install it.

'Cause manufacturer policy has a lot if restriction: "if you want something more - buy new car", so in general even the dealers can't make a lot of mods or shut down some options

pretty much : no

they said they would do it, the problem is that Jaguar UK does not relase to them the codes needed to update the eletronics to "know" that they now have AHB dimming.

To clarify : the light dimming option is NOT the white square on the mirror - that is for the mirror dimming. It is the bulk sensor on the mirror - my mirror support hanging thing its not that bulky, ie, does not have the sensor.

Default High Beam assist function

Thanks. Doesn't look promising for a retro fit. I was able to compare a car with the high beam assist function to mine. Once you see it, it's obvious the difference.
