Diagnosing suspension errors
Hey there -
I've got a 2013 XJ and over the last year or so I've been getting more frequent suspension errors (adaptive dynamics fault/suspension fault) and now it usually pings up within 15 minutes of driving. Restart the car and it's fine again for another 15 minutes etc.
I've put off doing anything about it in case it was the dampers failing, but looks much more likely to be a sensor which I can pick up on eBay for about £40 so I'm far more inclined to try and sort it now
My questions are this:
- What tool do I need to diagnose this properly? I've heard a standard OBDII isn't going to do the job. I've seen an iCarsoft USV20 FD-II for sale second hand, but I don't know if that will do everything I need, and I don't know if they all work for all vehicles out the box
- Are the sensors the same on each corner or is there a different part number for each?
- I've heard that you can do some sort of suspension reset/recalibration which is supposed to make a solid difference to ride quality. Any truth in this, and if so is there a tool I can buy to do this?
Many thanks!

Tentacle, I had a similar problem with my 2012 XJ. Tried a lot of readers and in short, you are going to need something pretty high end (I ended up using SDD to figure mine out). The +2 code is what narrowed it down to in my case the right front dampener. On a side note, this seems to be a common problem as I have heard of a few people having this exact issue and all of the people had to replace the same part.
I tried the recalibration and that just seemed to make things worse. Not to mention that I was trying to do it with a simple measuring ruler and the measurements were coming out at about 400mm, but the software was looking for a value in the 200mm range (200 +/- 20 mm). So, not quite sure what to say to doing it yourself unless you get the jaguar specific measuring tool.
A thing to keep in mind if you do the work yourself, raise an end of the car as level as you can. I ran into an issue where I jacked up one corner too far and then the kitty got mad and lowered the whole car down and would not raise the rear end. I had to go in and reset the suspension before it would raise back up.

One thing that you can do is lie to the system. If I can't level a car I change the numbers in SDD to make the car level. Sometimes those numbers are a good bit off what the factory suggests. It's very car specific.

Thanks both - I'm going to go and look into how SDD works and what I need to get it up and running. Plenty of access to a variety of laptops so I'm guessing it'll be like my INPA BMW days where I just find a cable and some software...?
I Have two of Foxwell's scanners with the proprietary JLR software. It has modes to initialize and adjust modules. The suspension modules deflates, initializes, reports pressures and voltages to all the sensors, both live and stores values. For less than $150.00 I believe it does everything one need for the car.
