Default Paddle Shift Operation XJ vs. XK

Question regarding the operation of the shift paddles in my '13 XJ. I have the vehicle programmed to allow operation of paddles when in "Drive" (vs. only in "Sport"). My question is this.... Once I use the paddle to change gears (usually to down shift on occasion) how do I return the transmission to "automatic" mode while proceeding down the road?

Note: With my '11 XKR all I do is hold both paddles back at the same time for a second or two and the system returns to auto mode. That does not happen in the XJ.

The only way I have found is to dial the transmission momentarily to "sport" and then dial back to "drive".

Am I missing something?

I just hold the "UP" paddle for a couple of seconds and it returns to "D"

Curious...How did you get your paddles re-programmed to function in Drive mode?

I found it as an option in the vehicle settings section. You push the start button without having your foot on the brake pedal (which turns on your accessories) and then press the OK button on the steering wheel. This opens a screen section on the right side of the main dash which allows various "setting choices" to be sellected.

That might not be available on pre-2013 (8-speeed) models. I'm not sure.

Robert,
Thanks for confirming my suspicion that paddle shifting while in D mode became available beginning with the 2013 models, and that the factory defaults can be changed in the Vehicle Setup menu in the instrument cluster.

you can also move your gear selector into S and back into D, wont cause any harm or damage

I'm pretty sure, but not absolutely certain, that when using the paddles in S the transmission will hold the selected gear and not automatically up/down shift (except maybe at the rev limit or coming to a stop). Using the paddles in D automatically reverts to D mode unless driving aggressively.

On both my XFS and XFR, when using the paddles in S, the car would downshift automatically when slowing to a stop, but it would not upshift even at redline/rev limiter, and the only way to invoke an upshift was to use the "up" paddle (or return to D mode).
In D using the paddles it would eventually revert to "normal" D after a period of not using either paddle, but the time varied a lot depending on throttle input, ie if constantly on and off the throttle it stayed in "virtual S" mode but after prolonged gentle throttle it reverted to normal D mode.
I strongly suspect the XJ behaves in exactly the same way.
