Service required warning and no oil level reading.

Service required warning and no oil level reading.
I have a newly acquired 2011 XJL Supercharged and have multiple questions but will do one related item at a time for simplicity. I started receiving a "Service Required" warning on the right dash panel when the car is first turned on and goes out when it is running. It looks like that is for the interval between oil changes from the manual. Is this the only thing that will turn this on? I know the oil was changed by the previous owner so maybe it was not reset. Hot do you reset this warning? When I bring up the oil level monitor it shows that the function is not available. How do I address this and could it be related? Thanks.

Sboblett, both of the items that you are seeing are "normal". The "Service Required" message can only be deleted using a dealership level computer (aka, the SDD program). This is something that most of us just live with unless you want to spend a few hundred dollars on the computer/cable. That is up to you.
As for the oil level not being available, again, this is normal. For the car to display the oil level, it needs to see the following: Engine not run for the previous 10 minutes. So, if you need to check the oil level, the easiest way is to simply get into the car and leaving your foot off of the brake pedal, push the START/STOP button. This will activate the car without starting the engine. You can then use the right controls to access the oil level indication. If you happen to forget this and you need to check the oil level immediately, then what you have to do is stop the car and turn off the engine. You then need to open the hood, open the driver's door, press and HOLD the CANCEL button as you push the START/STOP button (foot off of the brake). Once the car is up, then you can let go of the CANCEL button and scroll to the oil level indication and check it then.

This will also work:
Open the hood, press START/STOP button, without pressing brake pedal. Now you can go to the service menu by steering wheel buttons and you will receive an message "Oil level function not available" what you have already experiensed, now hit cruise CANCEL twise. Vóila.
