Steering knock diagnosis is in..
It seems the "intermediate shaft universal joint" is giving up the ghost. Kinda fits with what I feel on the wheel. The search for available parts and who pays now begins.
I assume that it is the part numbered 11 on this webpage. STEERING COLUMN ASSEMBLY.. Fits: 2011 Jaguar XJ Base | Jaguar Virginia Beach
Doesn't look like the joints are a serviceable item.
No clue on a cause. I wonder if the former owner was one of those folk who hauls the wheel round when the car isn't moving. Makes my mechanical sympathy chip scream when I see that going on.
