Default Is there a cheaper way to get map updates?

Jaguar want £169 + £5 shipping for the map update which is ridiculous considering I can buy a TomTom unit with free maps updates for life for £160!
If Jaguar charged a sensible amount - say, £50 - then I wager a lot more people would actually update.

........... and if Jaguar charged one third of the price for their cars, a lot more people would be driving them.

I've used this source which proved reliable across France and Spain last year:

2015 Jaguar Sat Nav Update Discs

That's for the older systems. The X351 needs a USB stick.
I don't agree with your point about "if Jags were cheaper". If the nav system was utterly state of the art and massively better than anything else out there then I could maybe understand it, but it isn't, and it never was even when it was first released. BMW charge £65 for their maps update for their current system by the way.

Dodge charges $200 for the map update DVD for my Charger. Most auto makers do charge.

It is free with Google, Here, Waze, etc. You could always just use your phone. I am happy with the Jag map program especially the instrument panel integration. The only reason to update is if where you travel is outdated on your current version for some reason. You might never need to update the maps.

Yeah, this is my issue. Where I live in the UK there's been a lot of road changes. My house for example is in the middle of a field as far as the nav is concerned.
I tend to just use my phone but it seems a waste having an integrated system that's largely useless.

Recently updated my Nav and it ran $200 and took 2.5 hours, but it not only has added roads but runs better. Be aware the the company that does the Nav Maps supplies many auto manufacturers. The reason I'm telling you this is that it takes them about 18 months to do an update, so if your roads are less then 1.5 years old they may not appears on the current release.

My area is about 5 years old so should be on the maps I would think. My car has the original maps for 2009 so are very out of date.

XJsss, I have recently noted a problem with the navigation and I am hoping that the update fixed it. The problem (as I see it) is when you specify how you want the maps to look (ie, no directions on the radio screen, showing every exit, showing places to eat and get gas, etc), when you deviate from the route the navigation selected, it will force the navigation back to showing you everything (ie, all exits coming up, all places to eat, all gas stations, etc). Did they fix this so the radio screen stays where you selected it when it recalculates your route? I find this very annoying as I live in an area where the maps are very out of date and the car is always recalculating and I hate having the 20 million places to eat and get gas shown to me when I am driving in a new place.

Thermo, i'm with you on this one. I think, however, that the list only 'pops up' without asking for it when you're on a highway, maybe just the interstates.

H2Oboy, I only seem to notice the change after I have it recalculate something or the gas gauge says I am low on fuel (I understand it shifting then and do not necessarily mind it). But, just because I change the path I am taking should not cause the unit to default back to some other mode.

Granted, on this same general idea, I would think that you can make it so the radio would default on to the last screen the radio was at (say the radio, not to the generic screen with all the functions). Normally if you have a screen pulled up, it is because you tend to use it a lot and therefore would make getting going in the car that much easier if the screen you wanted was already up, waiting on you.

Hi all, updated my 2010 XJL Portfolio yesterday with a USB stick form ebay seller hefaystos123 at a cost of £85 plus tracked/signed for postage. Worked fine after a 3 hour install and the new housing estate going up near us is on it. made a best offer which was excepted. cheaper than the £170 from Jag.

Any other changes such as better performance or anything? Still trying to decide whether to go ahead with it or not.
Thanks for the tip on the eBay seller. I'll use him if I do decide to go ahead.

There is a lot more detail on the maps, more tree symbols etc. and seemed a little faster to me but i have only used it twice so far. the voice control on the navigation also worked well.

I bought the official upgrade. The USB fob requires a code that is tied to your VIN (FYI).

Installation took about 2.5 hours.

I haven't really noticed any differences except that there are now new streets shown (i.e. the maps updated).

I figured my Maps were 6 years old, so $200 every 6 years is acceptable.

Best.
