I am about to pull the trigger on purchasing a used motor (XJL, supercharged, 27k). The guy was great enough to Facebook video it starting up and running. However, it had a bit of a tick when he put it very close to the supercharger. I can't remember if mine did the same thing or not *with the cover off*.
Could someone post a quick video of their 5.0 SC running (pref. cold start) with the cover off? I know it's a strange request.
There are lots of reasons for ticking noises, some normal, some not. It's normal to hear some ticking from the direct injection.
Apparently, that XJL is not in or near Huntsville. I wouldn't buy a used car sight unseen unless it was being sold by a Jaguar dealer with a CPO warranty and I had the right to return it within 24 hours for a full refund. I recommend that you ask the seller to take the car to a local Jaguar dealer for a Pre Purchase Inspection at your expense.
Sorry, I should have been more exegetical. The motor is for my XJL (2 x spun bearings). I've been looking through several outlets for a replacement, however unless I go well out of state they are hard to come by.
You are absolutely correct though; if only I hadn't let my excitement and impatience overshadow my judgement when I purchased mine (I bought in ATL). Ugh that was hard to admit. C'est la vie.
Your terminology -"motor" - mislead me into thinking that you were looking for a new motor car, and not a new engine. Many people use "motor" and "engine" interchangeably, but that is incorrect. Motors are powered by electricity and engines are powered by internal combustion ... most of the time.
I'm sure you thought what you wrote was clear, but what I understood was not what you meant. You didn't realize that what you wrote was ambiguous, just like one of my favorite examples: "John mopped the floor with Fred." Poor Fred ...

But wait - there's more! If a motor is powered by electricity, why doesn't it use motor oil? And shouldn't an internal combustion engine use engine oil, and not motor oil? And why do we park our cars in the driveway and drive them on the parkway? Sweet mysteries of life ...
