Default Steering rack boots, ÜRO JLM11688 do not fit

The outer tie rod diameter of the ÜRO part is on the order of 1.5" while the boot on the car is more like 0.5" diameter. What do I need?

The X300 tie rod end ball joint is different on the later similar X308 and they may have mixed them up being close

This is a pdf from the BMW website, but I was never able to confirm the exact ZF model # used on the X300

see page 55 of the file below for whatever it's worth

I think the X305 rack crosses to ZF 2869 301, which is slightly odd since the X308 is 2869 201. XJS 6.0L is 2869 801, and (2 of the 3 of) the gaiters available on rockauto look like they might fit.

I submitted a help request to JLRCP, but am not supremely sanguine about the possibility of getting a useful response. May have to just take the existing boot off and measure it or take it into a FLAPS and get the closest matching universal.
*Friendly local auto parts store, as was the vernacular on Rennlist in my 944 days

While you have the rod ends off the large cylinder end cap gland nut can come off to change the outer most O - ring to prevent future external leaks

Just a thought

You can slip these shims in without removing the rack

Couldn't find the good pic of the shims being installed

If you look from the top of the engine bay down you might see a gap in the original rack blocks nstallation , light on the floor to shin through

Your V - 12 might be in the way as the inline 6 is easy to see not being in the way

There are 2 different ZF racks on the X300 series , one with and one without the variable speed servo to dampen your steering wheel throws with speed

Jaguar Parts did reply. They said my car should take the large-outer-aperture boots. I suppose it's not impossible that the rack has been replaced.

1.5 inch is quite large for the outer tie rod , do they have the inter - facing boot diameter mixed up

Raining here for me to check mine and get my eyeballs on the data plate but the tie rods if I recall are around 3/4 inch

The jaguar parts site shows it as fitting an XJS
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...-clip-kit.html

For the X300/5 it WAS JLM11315
https://parts.jaguarlandroverclassic...e=C50572794813
And this looks the correct size.
BUT it shows it as superseded by the jlm11688 which looks like yours and wrong…

Sadly the correct one is out of stock, but looking at the pictures Jaguar are giving wrong data, so you can’t blame the after market makers….

Jag Classic Parts sent this pic:

Which, to be fair, does look like the diagram in the X300 parts catalog. Hard to tell in the low-res JLM11315 diagram if the outer holes are big or small.

G'day John,

I have just been down to my car, a 1994 XJ12, and had a look at the rack boots and they both have the wider end at the outer end, see pic attached.

Although I have had the rack off the car several times I have never had it apart and from the look of it it is the original rack boot. At the outer end it fits over what looks like a rubber donut though I can't tell if it is split and fits over the tie rod or if it has to be fitted before the tie rod end.

Of ourse with the larger opening at the boot outer end the boot can be fitted without removing the tie rod end.

I googled the part number and there appears to be both types of rack boot available, from the pix supplied, but nowhere have I found a reference to the 'rubber donut'.

Cheers,
Jeff.

I'm going to take a stab at Delphi TBR5104, which is listed to cross with JLM11688 but depicted thusly:

Rockauto shows no stock, so I ordered from summitracing. Estimated to ship on the 28th.

I just looked at mine VIN # 755xxx and has the outside rod end bearing side with the boot donuts with a smaller tie rod

So like Watto700's pic in post # 11

Getting more info

I looked and couldn't see any numbers on mine that make sense as to what # the rack I have

The hydraulic lines cover the whole data plate

I can feel the variable speed servo on the front side with wires coming out of it

I did find a pic on the internet that has the Jaguar # matching the parts reference

MNA3891AB which is a 7852 series in the internet pic and the Doc supplied above in post # 3

Your V 12 takes a different rack referencing the Classic Jaguar parts website

MNA3891CB superseeded by MNA3891CBE for left hand drive

best bets are the one for the 308 and 100 rack JLM20683 or the old 40 rack JLM1103

Thanks again, @Parker 7 . I ordered a JLM1103 from Welsh. Between that and the Delphi part, at least one of them should fit. If they both do, well, my car does have two old boots even if only one of them is currently torn.
