Default 04 XJ8 both front air springs drop randomly

We have a 2004 XJ8 with 48k miles. The suspension on the front has been dropping occasionally when we are driving and we get the 'suspension too low' fault on the dash. If we stop the car, shut it off, let it sit a bit and restart it pumps back up. When the suspension is dropped and car is running I don't hear the pump on. Does it stop trying to pump it up until car is restarted?

When the front drops is it ok to drive the car if we are very careful over bumps? It sure reides rough when they drop and the headlights are pointing 6 feet in front of the car. Happened the other night coming back from marathon of xmas shopping

Since it happens on both front wheels and the back is fine does that point to something common to both front springs? OR Do they operate independently?

I plan to spray soapy water to find air bubbles but don't know of anywhere to do this except the top of the spring towers and at the pump's fittings. I assume the pump is on the passenger side there on top.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

The air compressor and tank are in the trunk. Look in this part of the forum for "Information that you want." It will take you to a part of the forum where the large files are. You will find info to help you track the problem down.

The air compressor is in front of the left front wheel and behind the bumper. You need to do a lot of reading.. When you get the "veh too low" you should find a safe place to park it.

Odds are you have one or more leaky bags, a weak compressor, or both.

The air tank is in the trunk. If you are not mechanically inclined, find a good Jag mechanic and limber up the Visa.

I went through this last summer, I had to replace both air springs. I bought mine from Arnott and all is fine so far.

Thanks for the follow up guys.

I'm mechanically inclined so I'll do what I have to do to fix it. My wife hates not knowing when it will happen again. It seems to be temp related based on my experience and all the posts I've read but our temps here have been in the 40's or upper 30's when it happened. I read all the pages linked and I guess I'll start by spraying the seals I can find for a simple fix first.

TO be able to catch where the leak is I will have to leave the car outside on a cold night and hope it happens when I start it. Since the compressor only runs for a short time and if the car isn't up to proper height it will display the fault.

So I know the compressor is up front behind the bumper and the air tank is under the spare tire. Where are the sensors, solenoids or other joints located that I'll have to check?

Has anyone tried Arnott Industries Air Suspension replacement kit? Probably that should be a new thread.
