Hey everyone,

While I was tweaking some grounds on my 04 XJR, I noticed something strange, some pinched cooling lines. Is this factory? Honestly, I never noticed this before; but it looks like it may be stock? The initial line runs from the first picture to this... pump? Then it goes in front of the rad, to somewhere on the drivers side of the engine. This I assume pump has a line T-ed off of the main line, then has a feedback line that is basically pinched, and another line that runs around the car.

If it is stock, are the lines supposed to be pinched like that?

To me it looks like someone did not know how to route the hoses correctly.

Thepump you refer toisthe auxiliary cooling pump, it helps the flow for the heater.

This is how it looks on my car, I followed the original routing:

Hi Arctic_Man,
I agree with Thomas (as usual) that a "mechanic" has been there. I'm concerned with the number of 'worm drive hose clamps' that are present. The standard spring clips are proven to be perfectly adequate to keep the system leak free over many years. They also apply continuous circular pressure to the hose. They don't damage the hoses or pipes (many of which are plastic) and never slacken over time. They are also available from Jaguar Land Rover Classic Parts, and are not expensive. There is a special tool that allows them to be fitted in inaccessible locations, but it's quite cheap too. In the past I have carried out a supercharger replacement along with the valley hoses, and the tool was essential for some hose clamps.
I recommend that you seek out and replace these worm clips while you are working on the cooling system.

Yea, someone mucked with the cooling system a tad before I bought it. I assume they did not want to swap the hoses and made the repairs when the ends started to leak. Although I will say I am also an offender of using worm drive clamps. I just can never find them in stock when I hit up the store, and end up using what is on hand, lol. But I do know the risks that come with using them.

For the auxiliary pump. That must not be the right pump then? It seems pretty wonky. It has a hose with a pretty tight bend coming out of one side of it. I assume to block flow out of it? I should have highlighted it. But I Assume this is not normal. The red shows the hose that is going from one inlet/outlet to the other. The two on the other side come off of the random T in my cooling line and then wraps around the front of the car going somewhere.



It has been this way for years, as I bought the car in 2018 or so and I certainly would never get this... creative. My intention is not to fix it just yet, as I want to more understand what this is even doing. But once my lift frees up I will probably dig into a bit more.


The more that I think about it too and look at that diagram, I know the actual auxiliary exists. I saw it the other day swapping some pulleys. I am also fairly certain the SC cooler exists in its correct location too. So... What is this pump doing? I just put everything back together and now everything is in the way again, but I may need to get some more pics to share showing how strange this pump is.

Finally, to add to the tale, the location isn't maybe that clear. This pump is nested under the fuse box in the car under the hood. Which the aux pump is closer to the radiator and the SC pump is in the wheel well area. I found this pump originally when I was fixing the ground on that side near the headlamp and needed room to drill a new bolt.

DO NOT use worm drive or jubilee clips/clamps on any hoses that connect to a plastic fitting as they cause the plastic to fail prematurely. Only use constant tension clamps if plastic fittings are involved.
