2005 Xj8l gauge cluster removal
Hey guys I'm trying to figure out how to remove my gauge cluster. I have not been able to find a previous post. Can anyone give me a step by step info for getting this done.
Not having done it, this is second hand hearsay, however; my understanding is the console has to come out, but that is easier than it looks. you start at the rear, once the grille is off 4 screws hold it. Again my understanding is; that it becomes obvious after the console is out.
Pretty easy. I haven't removed the cluster so I can't tell you about that, but the steps to get you to the cluster are as follows:
- Remove the cigarette lighter and 12-volt socket plugs in rear of the center console. Stick your thumb in one socket and your index finger in the other and pull straight out. Unplug all of the connectors and remove the two T-30 (I believe) torx screws.
- Using a panel popper/lever (preferably plastic if you are not experienced at prying interior panels), pry the wood shifter bezel upwards. You will find another two T-30 torx screws here. Remove.
- Now you can remove the center console
- Next you will need to remove the large wooden dash panel that surrounds the instrument cluster. Carefully pry the outer parts of this panel, working your way toward the center. Again use a plastic panel popper/lever. After removal, detach all of the metal clips that remained attached to the little tabs on the back of the wooden dash panel and insert them back into each of their locations. By doing this, the dash panel will easily slide back into place and you won't risk breaking any of the brittle plastic receivers in the dash. Also collect the three little plastic isolators that fell on the floor and retain them for when you reinstall the dash panel later.
- Find the four screws that hold the instrument cluster bezel and unfasten them. Remove the bezel. Now you should have access to the cluster. You may have to remove the steering wheel to R&R the cluster, which is easy and you can find the instructions somewhere here in this forum. Make sure to disconnect the battery before you remove the airbag.
