Question 2005 XJR - Thinking about moving to 18 inch wheels

I've read a large number of threads on the topic here, so I'm just trying to clear up a couple of ambiguities. Back story is NYC roads, I either garage the car every winter till all the potholes are filled (i.e. never) or I drive like a buttercup eggshell so I don't go through 2 or 3 tyres a year... so I'm thinking I should put a bit more rubber between me and the road.

First off, do I care if I go to 18x8, or do I need to look for 18x8.5? What's the main reason for either? Is there any major concern for either?

Second, I know there's a lot of opinion but what's the latest word on tyres for someone who -occasionally- hits the 100 mark but generally drives pretty reasonably? Noise isn't a huge concern for me, I'm usually blasting music or radio, just looking to maybe soften the ride up a little.

Thanks in advance folks...

For XJR, smallest available wheels when new were 19X8.5J.
If 18 inch wheels fit, 8.5J vs 8J is difference in tire size - 255/45 vs 235/50, and of course tire pressure shall be higher with 255/45s.

For a softer ride 235/50 might be a better bet, if 18X8J wheels fit.

I use 18" wheels for my winter tyres, Nokian 235/50 tyres, they are great, I have not found them to be noisy, they last well and comfortable. The wheels also fit over my Brembo Brakes on the Super V8 as well.

18x8 with 235/50 97W tyres is the Jaguar OEM size for 18" wheels.

Which I indeed had on my previous X350. My current X358 is on 19" but in truth there is little difference in ride quality, just slightly harsher. However I really noticed on the old car when I swapped out the 20" Sepangs for the 18" Tucanas.

Trip to Berlin showed the car at it's best on the billiard-table German roads. Our own roads are a 3rd World disgrace.

Thanks everyone! I'm sold on the Tucanas I think, and then probably Continentals.
