I’ve recently started hearing a ticking noise behind the dash when I start my car. It eventually stops. Yesterday I was able to pinpoint the noise before it stopped. See photo. The white portion of this actuator wouldn’t stop moving causing the clicking noise. Is this the first sign of this actuator going bad? Thank you.
Those actuators can definitely get noisy, may not necessarily mean that it's failing. There was even a TSB (http://jagrepair.com/images/TSB/NewD...B00066NAS3.pdf) for replacing noisy actuators in the S type. I've got a couple in my car that have ticked slightly (sort of sounds like boiling water if the engine is off) and they have been working fine the last 10 years.
I believe there are 7 actuators in total. Some can be replaced by reaching up behind the dash, others require the dash out. The actuators themselves are about $200 each from Jaguar.
They do set errors so you can tell which one is giving problems. But it takes a very good code reader like the factory SDD to see them.
Does that blend door ever stop moving? These do a calibration on power up and if they can't determine what position the blend door is in they will keep cycling trying to calibrate the blend door.
