Default Bluetooth Question

My 2004 XJR with nav does not have the PSE or phone. I've been reading dozens of threads on adding the appropriate parts, i.e., PSE, bluetooth adapter, microphone, etc. Today I came across an old thread that had this to say about the bluetooth module:

"My car currently has neither bluetooth nor a PSE and I was wondering if it is actually supported as the installation instructions for the adaptor from Jaguar say that it is from VIN G45171."

My VIN is lower than this. Does anyone have any clarification or any more info? I've checked prices from several sources and this is the first I've heard that some 2004 cars are different.

The Bluetooth training guide says:

Pre Wire Information
All North American vehicles are 100% pre-wired.

XJ - 100% pre-wired all markets from: G45171

Earlier XJ variants prior to G45171 the harnesses are incompatible with the Bluetooth® system.

I have seen a thread or two explaining how to modify the harness though so, either way, you should be able to get it working.

Thanks. I've been searching for that thread with no luck. Do you remember which area it was in?

I think this could have been one of them:

Thanks I searched the UK forum for several hours and found more useful clues, but no specifics. Apparently, the early UK cars had GSM phones which were not compatible with Bluetooth. (I also had to remember that when they say "2003" they mean model year 2004.) The guy who was posting in the thread you linked to, x-dave, had this to say in another thread:

Bluetooth was an option in the 2006MY. No XJs prior to that will be prewired. However -- the US AMPS phone uses the exact same wiring as the Bluetooth system, so US cars with any phone or prewire can upgrade to Bluetooth just by swapping the modules over.
I have retrofited a US-spec telematics harness to my XJ6, and am doing it to my XJR over the coming weeks as well. Having said that, the connectors are there so long as you are prewired for the fixed phone (your dealer can check, or you can look for the connector). If that is the case then you are only missing a single length of wire between two of the connectors so it would be possible to upgrade your harness for less than a replacement.
Sounds like the difference between the GSM wiring and the US version may be only the one wire he is talking about adding, and that would make all the US cars compatible already. I saw another UK thread where someone with a 2004 was told his wasn't compatible because his VIN was below where the bluetooth wiring started. Perhaps the VIN range from the bluetooth manual was refering to the UK spec cars? Has anyone here added the bluetooth module to a car below that range?

That was actually the same thread. For some reason my link took you just below that post but it was the one I meant you to see

You're right. I read so many of his threads I didn't realize that was the same one.

Is the phone harness the empty grey connector in this picture?

No I don't think so. My 2004 XJ came with the factory analog AT&T phone. The connector under the armrest was about 1" square. I simply removed the wiring harness and cradle and installed the BT puck. I also had to swap out the PSE module in the trunk to a later version.
