Default Center Console Latch installation question

I purchased a new latch used to access the center console compartment for my 2008 Jaguar XJ. My question is in regards to installation.

I removed the old latch which had one side that would no longer stay connected to the pin. I removed the latch by pulling it off the other pin. The latch had a foam spring behind it for tension. I can by applying pressure snap the old latch back onto the pins but the faulty side continually pops loose as expected.

The new latch does not install onto the pins with moderate pressure as did the old one. I realize the old one is worn hence the difference in the amount of pressure necessary to install, but before I force the new one on. Does the latch just snap into place or do I need to disassemble the console and slide the pins into place?

It does take a bit of force and goes in with a clear click. If you press both sides evenly you should be fine.
