Default Cold Feet

I'm on the verge of getting a 2005 off-lease XJ8. This would be my first Jag, the car of my dreams since I was a little kid.

Here ismy concern. Although I have a pretty good, reliable, and honest local mechanic, the nearest Jaguar dealer is 100 miles away. How big a headache is that likely to be? Are there going to be regular issues that can only be serviced at a dealership? Or, will someone more local likely be able to deal with all but the most unusual issues?

Thanks in advance for your help.

The biggest problem will be finding someone with a scan tool that can access all of the jaguars modules of which there are many. Not many independent shops have the equipment for that.

You may not be going to dealership that often. Get an extended warranty.

If your mechanic knows someone with a Ford VCM tool - local Ford dealer perhaps. You can grab the Jag IDS diag software form eBay.
The VCM is a small gizmo that connects your computer with the car. The Jag/Land Rover diagnostic software (IDS) uses the same VCM as Ford/Mazda may be Honda (I'm not 100% sure).

Now they also need to know what they are doing with the diag equipment, but ate least it should be able to pull all diag codes form any sub system of the car.

There are also 3rd Party scanners than can speak "jaguar", but your mileage may vary. I tried one such tool in a local shop and it claimed my engine and/or ECM are missing and other utter nonsense.

Default Thanks!

Thanks all for your help and advice!

I talked to our local BMW dealer's service department yesterday afternoon. They specialize in servicing European luxury cars of all makes, including Jaguar, so I think I'm good to go!
