Default First shift into D or R from cold is quite violent

When starting from cold, the initial shift from Park into R or D is really quite violent - I have to press down on the brake as hard as I can to minimize any physical movement of the car and the whole experience is unnerving. I noticed that immediately after the car is started, the revs are up around 1200 (presumably fast idle b/c the engine is cold) but then settle back to around 660 after 20 secs or so. If I wait this 20 sec until the revs drop, the shift is not so violent but still not as smooth as when the tranny is warm.

Anyone have any simlar experiences or know what the issue might be please?

Thanks!

Steve.

I do not know what might be causing your problem, but I am certain something is definitely not right. However, based on the tag line in your post, this is the wrong forum for your vehicle - it is specifically for the X350 platform (2004 and newer XJ8s). You might find owners that have experience with your problem if you post in the forum for the X308 platform. See the forum list on the home page.

Thanks Goose - someone else pointed out the error of my ways in another post - I will re-post on the XJ8/XK8 forum.

Cheers,

Steve.

For what it's worth, since new I've ALWAYS waited for the revs to drop to 800 or so before shifting into gear, and have insisted my wife do the same. A 6-sp. auto tranny is a hell of an expensive item to fix or replace, so the jolt and the wear and tear of that high-rev shift is something I can control and likely extend the life of my tranny. 20-30 seconds wait is not too high a price to pay, IMO.

Alpinejag, the issue with my XJ8 (X308, not X350) - I know, wrong forum :-) - is only from cold start. However, I had exactly the same issue that you describe - except I had this problem with my 2007 Ford Explorer. That one turned out to be a re-programming job under warranty at the dealership i.e. it was not a mechanical problem. Anyway, they sorted it and it hasn't done it since. Good luck getting your issue resolved.

Cheers,

Steve.

I have a 2001 xj8 with the same issue, with the recent cold weather some things become more apparant, like you say, when cold you put your foot on the break and drop in the D or Reverse and it pulls heavy, mine at one point stalled when putting it into reverse, also, when slowing down to stops, its a bit lumpy and when pulling off from stops, mine, randomly, will thump and slam and shoot forwards and its not nice at all.

i was also getting a whine up at 3,000 Rpm's or/and when i kicked down when driving.

I took mine into a indipentant and he checked things over, he found that i was a liter short of fluid, that, when replaced took away the Whine after a few days of driving.

Now the thump and slam issue, TCM reprogram may sort it out, but a test you can do to see how the car responds is this : it sorted my Trans shifting out, well at least for a week.

Take off your POS/NEG battery cables and join them for 10 minutes, Put the TCM back into default learn mode.

When i did this, the car stopped that Rough shifiting and slamming, id never experienced such a great shift to be honest.

But after a couple of weeks it started to **** up again.

now i have other worrying issues with the car to go with it, when im cruizing along lets say about 50-60 i will get a low thump fromn the transmission and a AMBER transmission fault come on, but it just goes away with out any problems as soon as i put some gas to the peddle.

It does not go to limp mode or anything.

its done that 3 times now.

If you read the Michelle reports on this Trans, in between a certain vin range and year it calls for a TCM replacment or UPgrade.

Jag made my **** laugh when they quoted 2000 bucks for the new unit.

but thats what they run at, im going to get the indie to reprogram my TCM for 150 bucks, might as well get used to buring money if your going to own a jag it seems.

The one thing im worried about is, when starting my car warm, i get a rattle and lumpy sound sound from the engine, which seems to go away after 10-20 seconds of running.

idle air control maybe or PCV valve or maybe, timing chain tensioners?.

when its cold starting its fine, but i have the aid of the auto choke.

so im guessing because its now warm and theres not chock to assist, theres a Idle air control valve issue.?????
