Flex plate on 99 XJ8

Flex plate on 99 XJ8
Does anyone know the way to align the flexplate on a 98 xj8? I was under the impression that the pattern on the Crank and flexplate would only let it go on one way, but Im having problems with timing and I know Im doing the Chains right and think this might be my issue. Can it go on more then one way?? thanks everyone in advance ... got engine out this morning ..Again !
