Default Hard Reset

Well, I completed the "hard reset", "soft reset", "medium reset"... you name it. I was waiting for Goldilocks to pop out of the trunk!

I've been trying to see if my "Cruise Not Available" message would disappear from my speedo gauge. No such luck. I bought my 2004 XJR a month ago and the message appeared after I started the car the day after I brought it home.

I disconnected the battery terminals and touched them together for 30 seconds, then reconnected and nothing changed.

I eventually disconnected the battery for over 12 hours with the cables touching. When I reconnected it, the alarm went off, but none of the radio or Nav settings were erased. What does it take to completely erase all data/memory from the system?

Should I just go to a dealer and have them hook the car up to the computer? Can an Indie mechanic fix this for less money?

On earlier models, cruise control can be inhibited by a faulty speed control switch on the brake pedal. It could be something as straightforward as that.

The first step in troubleshooting an issue like this is to have the DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) read. Without checking these it's all speculation.

Before going to the dealer, it's worth having this done and posting any codes back here. Post the actual codes and not what whoever reads them tells you they mean.

Graham,

I do have an OBDII code reader. I hooked it up and it didn't show any codes. I think that this error message is "Jaguar Specific". I would love to own a device that can read, troubleshoot, and correct software problems with my car. Is there a reasonable scanner that will do that?
