Default Headlights flicker during day when on auto

When my headlight switch is on autothe lightshave started to flicker on and off. This happens when it is bright and sunny and not even getting close to dusk. Dealership can't replicate the problem (of course) but now I have to manually turn off and on because I don't want people to think I'm flashing at them.
Any one had problems like this?

BTW, Great forum!!

Hi,
Mine does this, too.
I don't think its sensor related. If it was, then each time the lights come on, they would stay on for a short while. The car appears to be programmed that way to prevent this kind of flickering when driving under shadows.
So, as this flicker can be quite rapid, I'd suggest it may be the switch/stalk might be making intermittent "ON"-type connections when in the auto position. I'm not sure, but I think I noticed the flicker when the car hits a bump in the road

I do too! I just bought this puppy along with a new Zeo Trap Parts,,and this flickering thing is really annoying. But I've been doing my research on this issue..

I've not noticed mine flickering but in the daytime when I put the car in Park, the lights go out. Could the Park switch be causing the problem?

Been away for a while, sorry

Have been monitoring this and thinking about it...

(non HiD by the way)

The lights come on immediately when dark with no delay but the switch-off delay is still there. Previously, it would take 5/10 seconds of dark before coming on. So, if I drive under a tree for a fraction of a second the lights flicker on immediately and then immediately off again.

I think the cause of this is down to some capacitor/delay circuit on the sensor-on section of the switching.

Maybe I need to scan the wiring diagram and drop in an electrolytic capacitor onto an "on" line

Place a cover over the sensor at the base of the windscreen. The lights should come on after a few seconds, not immediately. Leave the cover over the sensor and drive around some and see what happens. If the lights stay on with no flickering, you might want to replace the sensor.

since a recent "battery hard reset" it now takes 2 seconds to come on.
Faster than its supposed to so its not a problem and the only downside is that they come on whilst driving under bridges.

At least i dont get any annoying flicker now, though - so I'm happy!

Did you ever get this figured out? I have an XKR with driver side headlight going off at times?

My machine did it when in the "auto" position, so I use the "on" position only- no problems now.

I used to leave my X308 permanently on auto but the X350 seems to be hyper sensitive to shadows so I went back to manual control as I too was embarrassed at constantly flashing other cars.

I am driving too and from work in half light at the moment so instead got bugged by the lights not on message on the dashboard constantly appearing so for now I have switched on day time running lights in the touch screen menu. The nav screen now flicks between dark and light and the green light on the dashboard flicks on and off but at least I am no longer flashing people!

I thought about modifying it as well so if you do find out how to please let us know!

The X308 used to have a rotary knob on the rear view mirror that allowed you to modify the sensitivity of the sensor. I wonder if something similar could be added.

Default Headlights come on/off during day and when key fob to lock

Hey,

Love my 2005 XJ8L (only owner)... However, I have a problem with my lights coming on an off during the day (almost like a flickering). When I hit lock my doors, there is this on/off flashing that is pretty embarrassing. Went to the dealer 3x & they can't seem to fix. The last time they replaced my sensor on the dash & wouldn't you know, when I got home & locked the doors... same flashing on/off... Uuugh! Now I'm being told they have to see it don consistently before I can have service... Any help out there, love this car, but darn!!!
