Default Headligt Bulb Replacement

How does one access the right side headlight bulb? I tried opening it up and the bottom wire retainer popped off in the process of having to twist the cover to get the bulb in and I can't get the lower wire retainer back on, the access is so tight. I got the bulb in and the cover back on with the upper retainer latchedbut the lower wire retainer could not be reinstalled. There was more room on the left side and it worked okay. I am a little worried that without the lower retainer in place, the cover will leak water into the housing.

The car is the XJ8. I figured there was some trick I wasn't seeing but maybe I'm just not that dexterous.

Xenon or regular bulb? I have xenons and they were a bit tight to replace. I have a spare headlight unit out so I can take some pics for you if you want.
