Default "Hood Open" warning RESOLVED

When changing my air and cabin filters today I thought I would lubricate the hood latches. However, when restarting the car the "hood open" warning light came on. I cleaned off the excess grease on the latches, but to no avail. Even with some degreaser it still displayed the warning. What could I have done wrong here?

Help!

Under one of the latches(the one with the black metal cover) there is a switch

and the lubricant has got into the switch.

Yes you'll need to replace it or bypass it, otherwisae you'll find your car alarm going off at random times.

This has happened to me and more than a few others...............common issue

Yep, had mine bypassed too and now no more alarm issues

Generally, I'm not a fan of this type of mod and would usually replace as original, but no harm done here I believe.

Congrats on the fix

When my car was new, I just shoved the bonnet closed gently, assuming it closed easily like all the other doors on the vehicle. I would get the bonnet light. I learned the bonnet has to be slammed to get the light to stay out.

Hello,
Would you mind telling me where to insert the paper clip?
I have the same issue you had (hood open warning)
Also... did you use a small or a large paper clip?
Thanks

After a few months of "bonnet open" and "boot open" warnings, along with some very annoying car alarm events at all hours, I took the car to PJ's European auto in Huntington Beach, CA.

It was the hood switch. The part cost $48. Total cost, (part plus electrical diagnosis plus replacement) $163.

Ugh! DON'T "Slam" the Jaguar's beautiful aluminum hood. An examination of the latch mechanism reveals there are TWO latches about 10" from center on each side,

The appropriate procedure for the Jaguar Motorcar is as follows:

a) Get 2 soft cloths from the trunk. Preferably cashmere or a nice chamois, no tweeds or worsteds, as they can scratch the beautiful, mirror like paint, You DO always have some soft cloths in the trunk, right?

b) After you have gently closed the hood to it's safety latch position, place one hand on each side of the leaper, above the latch, with the soft cloth between your dirty, sweaty, uncouth hands, and provide the bonnet with appropriate nudge of between 16.5 and 22.13 ft. lbs of exertion upon the bonnet in a downward motion. Do NOT allow a differential of more the 2.1 ft. Lbs of force between sides.

Give the leaper a nice, but respectful pat on the haunches, fare thee well and good day to you sir!

Failure to perform the above procedure will likely cause a malfunction of the "bonnet open" sensor.

I'm new to the Jaguar Forum and see others having the same problem. I've only owned my 2008 VDP for abut 10 weeks, and am ready to sell it. I'm not cut out for the nearly daily problems that keep coming up. The first 30 days were fine, while it was under a 30 day warranty. Almost that next day, I started having seatbelt alerts that my seatbelt wasn't strapped. Then the windshield washer stopped working last Tuesday. I opened the hood to check the washer reservoir and it was full. Closed the hood exactly as it is supposed to be done, and now this Hood Open light won't stop coming on. Sometimes it comes on when I'm on the highway doing 60 mph. That'll make you nervous. I've stopped having passengers in this car because I can't take the embarrassment and humiliation of what false alarm will start happening next. Them left turn signal only works when it feels like it. I've cleaned the contact point with contact cleaner, and that helped for a week, then it started not working again. I'm afraid to use the cruise control unless there are no other cars on the road. The heater core dumped fluid all over my floor mats the first time I turned on the heat in the car. I also have a puddle of coolant on my garage floor.

I really regret buying this Jaguar so much. I've owned luxury cars from other brands all my life and never have I had the kind of non-stop pummeling of problems in a car within a 10 week period of ownership.

I took the advice of one of the members n this thread, and tried to close it gently with soft cloths, and the Hood Open light went off finally.

Well that lasted for about 2 miles, then it came back on again.

So I took the other approach mentioned here - which was to fully lift the hood and with all my might slam the hood closed. Now the light is fixed finally. Wish i could slam my seat belt buckle, maybe that would fix that issue?
