I need Tire advice....Asap!!
Hi All,
I have a set of ContiPro's that are way beyond their replacement date. I am trying to find out what tires to use on my XJ Vanden Plas to achieve the greatest ride comfort and lowest noise level. I was told they had to be V rated...is that correct?
Currently, I am looking at Bridgestone and Michillen but I don't know which to get of those two brands. Plus there may be others I haven't considered.
Any help would be greatly appreciated from my fellow jag lovers.
Cheers!
Brian

They are a heavy high performance car.
Thesee cars were fitted ex factory with Pirelli P zero's IIRC.
I wouldn't bother with either Michelin or Bridgstone
Both tend to be noisy and you can forget about Pirelli.
It's only my opinion born out of experience but I consider
the Yokohama Advan series to be excellent for these cars.
What sort of driver are you?

Hello Brian....the 'V' rating is too low...these cars need a 'W' rating or higher.

I am just a regular driver. I do the speed limit (for the most part
) so I would say that I am more into the comfort and style of the jaguar than how it corners, etc..
I've always had good luck with Michillen's pilots but with so many new options out there now I am kind of scratching my head. The Bridgestone Turanza Serentys are marketed as being super quite but I have read some horrible reviews on them oddly enough regarding noise.
I was looking at a set of Cooper tires because they are soft rubber and appear to have very good ratings when it came to comfort and noise. However, the guy at NTB yesterday told me that they are too soft for the weight of a Jag?? That came off as a bit odd (as I know they will try to sell you the most expensive thing they have). ARGH!

Has anyone driven on a set of Bridgestone Turanza Serenity tires? I am really curious as to how whether they are as quiet as their commercials say.

Hey XJay8 ...........btw thanks on those Yokohomas they look like they might do the trick. I will have to research them a little more but they sure are advertised as the quiet luxury car tire
Our preowned XJ came with Firestone Firehawks. I probably would have never chosen this tire based on my previous bias towards other brands, but after a year I can say I will buy another set in a heartbeat. They are wearing well, handle great and our Jag is the quietest riding car I've ever been in. My pop is a lifelong cushy-ride Buick guy, and when he drove the Jag out to our home to surprise my wife on her birthday, he also came out and said it's the quietest car he's ever driven. Mom and dad just bought their first foreign job, a 2014 Lexus ES350 and are still a bit let down when comparing it to our XJ.
Guess that's TMI, but I'm sold on the Firestones.

Don't overlook Discount Tire and their Yokohama YK580's. I put a set of these on my XJR late last year and have been very pleased.

I wouldn't worry too much about speed ratings then.
But....
DO pay attention to load ratings. That's something you shouldn't stray far from spec on, if at all

I have Yokohama YK580's on mine and they are very good. Reliable wet weather, dry weather and quiet overall. They are the 245/45 R18 96W ones and not the recommended 245/55 R18 96W ones.
So slightly lower profile and slightly harder ride ( I presume). I will try the 245/55 next time. I like the Yokohama tread pattern..

So you really like them? Do they give you that "true" luxury feel?
Thanks
Can you help me here.....load ratings? What is the spec on that?
Thanks,
Brian
Whatever your driving style, you have to respect the speed and load ratings. They are on your certificate of conformity (W or higher for speed, for load I don't remember but I think it's 97 or higher)
Otherwise you run the risk that your insurance company will not cover you in case of accident.

Not sure of ramifications on where you are but here the tyres speed rating must reflect manufacturers tyre rating for speed.
insurance companies are happy for an 'out' and underrated tyres will do it for them. Worth checking into before your purchase. BTW I am extremely happy with my Kumo's.

This doesn't appear to be an issue with USA insurance companies.
Years ago, when I was in the business, I spoke with our body shop manager and several insurance adjusters from the bigger USA companies about this subject. They looked at me as though I was from another planet. None of them had ever heard of a claim being denied due to the type of tires.
To play it safe a person could always call and ask.
