Default Ignition Remote Programming

As I only got one remote with my '05 XJ8L. The dealer wants $200+ just for the remote and can I can buy one on EBay for about $50. The dealer just quoted me $121 just to program it. Is there a DIY way to program the remote? As usual the dealers are charging in lawyer level per hour.

Hi, i found this on the UK forum ages ago and kept a copy in case I ever needed it.
I have not tried it but it appears to work from what I have read.
I had to do a similar thing when I programmed a new remote for my Ford van, you have to redo the original remote as well and do them one after the other as it states.
Best of luck

Reprogramming of Jaguar blipper
You can try the program procedure;

Ignition key in off position.
Pull headlamp flasher stalk towards you and hold.
Turn key to position 1.
Release flasher and quickly flash 4 or five more times - you'll hear the security module in the boot chirp once, it's not very loud so leave your radio off.
Unit is now in programming mode, any currently associated remotes are now deleted.
Press unlock or lock on the remote, you'll hear one beep again, if you have another remote press lock or unlock on it as well, again a beep, this needs to be repeated for 5 remotes, if you only have the one remote press it's button five times, if you have two remotes do one once and the second 4 times, you get the idea? After the five programming cycles you'll hear a double chirp to confirm programming is complete.
Remove key and test your remotes.

This worked perfectly for me today as it happens, when I discovered my spare remote didn't work even after changing it's battery.

I have heard that the cycle of five is not necessary and if you just do each remote once and wait, the system will time out and you'll get the double beep anyway, but the above sequence worked a charm for me.

I remember seeing a warning in the manual about needing two remotes to program a third. It said if you try to program a replacement remote with just one originial, the original will be cleared. I'll have to double check when I get home.

Does this also work for my '07 XK? I understand you have to program the new key fob and reprogram the old one at the same time.

HI, have a look at these links to the UK forum, I think when they mention needing two originals it is when you want to get the chipped key copied and not the fob.
On my Ford van I only had one original fob, I followed a similar type of sequence and it re-programmed the original fob and also programmed the new fob as well.
On the UK forum is a contributor called BuckMR2, have a look at his posts in the first link below.

That's great to hear that it worked for you. Glad to be of help.
Enjoy your car, I have had jaguars for 20 years now and have always tried to find the most sensible way to keeps costs down. The Internet really has helped us to do this and makes the world a much smaller place !

This is for program remotes, not keys, correct?

For the X350, manual programming of the REMOTES is as follows:

1 Pull headlight lever to "flash" [back] and insert key while holding.
2 While still holding headlight lever, turn key to position I [not ignition on, that's position II]
3 Release headlamp lever and then flash headlights four more times.
4 You will hear a beep
5 Press a button on each fob to program [it will beep for each one]
6 Key off

Now you're set.

Cheers,

Thumbs up It Worked!

I have a 2004 XJR and one of my key fobs stopped working. I changed the battery and I still could not get it to work. I followed the instructions above and it is once again working. Thanks guys for the help in getting my problem resolved.

I tried the formulas cited above multiple times without success. I bit the bullet and took it to my local dealer. I think it cost about $90 but I thought it worthwhile. I just felt silly keying the lock.

Does anybody think that these symptoms are caused by a weak car battery? Or just quirky electronics?

If you are talking about the remote function stopping, and not working again until they are reprogrammed to the car, the battery in the car is not related. The early remotes appear to be pretty susceptible to static electricity causing them to loose their mind. They made a small anti-static pad to put over the buttons inside, and it helped quite a bit. But, only the later, newer remotes seemed to be immune.

The pad was part of a Service Action and is attached.

Cheers,

it seems like that would only happen to one key fob at a time --- very unlikely that it would happen to both of them at the same time.... imo

I know what it seems..........I can only tell you what is. My suggestion is to try the manual fob programming and see if yours will work again. If they do, the antistatic pad is about our only option, the other would be a later version of the fob. More than one have been in your shoes and continued to function for a long time after the pads were installed.

Cheers,

Can I assume that if you get an uncut key with fob, and get it laser cut but not programmed, this programming method is adequate to allow it to start the car? I have heard what sounds like BS that the fob must also be "programmed to the barrel" and that requires the dealer computer

My X350 V6 has just lost the plot with both key fobs. Locked fine last night, wouldn't open this morning with either, had to use the key. I've replaced the battery in the main fob and tried to reprogram it using the advice from XJRGUY above, which is bang on the money - many thanks XJRGUY, but I get no response from the car when pressing the fob buttons.
I've tried a complete reset of the car by disconnecting the battery and leaving it for 30minutes, but this didn't work either. The fact that both fobs have stopped working makes me think it's a problem with the receiver on the car. The battery is almost brand new and a good one, actually the same as the XJR. Is there a fuse or something I can check?
Any thoughts before I part with lumps of Wonga at the dealer?

The headlamp flashing has to be done really quickly for it to work,I had to try it 3/4

times before it worked.

Hi Jrgbrowne, I had exactly the same issue with my 2004 x350. I had all sorts of suggestions about possible fixes with anti static pads but because both fobs failed to work simultaneously it was likely to be the car. I bought a second hand drivers door module which meant the fobs worked again but the alarm would go off. Once the car had been programmed to accept the new DDM everything worked again perfectly. It was £50 for the DDM on eBay and £40 at my local dealer for the programming.
