Hi Steve,

the weight is onpurpose as to dampen vibrations. A lighter materila wouldnotbe soeffective for that.

Best regards,

Thomas

I have seen similar materials used for sound deadening. I need to replace insulation piece on my bonnet, there are 3 reservations I have:
1. How difficult it will be to remove it?
2. It does spell in bold letters DIY.
3 when, not if, adhesives looses strength, with all that air moving there, is it going to get in some undesirable areas?
OEM piece that there now lost its rigidity and is not presentable any longer. But I used to get complements when it was intact!

1. How difficult it will be to remove it? It is such a small area that I think it would be removable without a lot of effort. I can't imagine needing to remove it because it is now part of and installed with the bulkhead. By the looks of it, I think it will out live us.
2. It does spell in bold letters DIY. Don't see a question here.
3 when, not if, adhesives looses strength, with all that air moving there, is it going to get in some undesirable areas? Unknowable; however, if it deteriorates to that level, I suspect it could be pulled out.

Big Koshka: Mine is in good shape, but if I were going to do underhood, I might go this route. I would suggest using the shiny foil version (versus black) of the Canopus butyl rubber/foil film - might look less DIY. The glue they use is seriously tenacious, and removal might require 91% isopropyl to loosen first.

FYI - when I installed my Arnott shocks, I removed all the compressor tank and valves, then lined the metal in trunk with the Canopus material. I also lined the underside of the wheel well arches (the thin plastic wheel liner), and the canopus material is holding up great and eliminates a lot of tire/road noise. I also lined the belly pan (on the engine-facing side) when I removed the foam-in-a-shopping bag OEM insulation (on belly pan). Again, is holding up great to heat & moisture.

On my previous XK, I replaced headliner. When I extracted old headliner, before I had it recovered and re-installed, I also lined the metal with the thinner version of canopus butyl rubber/foil insulation (between headliner and aluminum roof). Huge difference in noise level.

Oh, Steve, I highly suggest getting one of these little application roller doohickeys, and roll the heck out of the insulation after you apply it. When the crosshatch basically disappears, you know you have applied sufficient pressure.
